Because women on dating apps already get more messages than they can answer, and a quiet page gives her no reason to pick yours. A thin inbox is normal, and sending first is the part you control. Check your settings, your first picture and your written lines, then start the conversations yourself with short Intros built on one detail from her page.
Most men do not get many
Attention on every dating app is lopsided. a dating coach describes it this way: a small share of men take a very large share of the attention, so the average man gets less than he expects.
An empty inbox is therefore normal. It does not mean the app is rigged against you or that something is wrong with you as a person. It means the first message is not going to come to you in the volume you want, and waiting for it is the weakest plan available.
Where messages actually come from
On OkCupid you have to Like a woman before you can write to her. After that you can send one Intro. It goes to her Intros tab, you get moved toward the front of her Discover, and if she Likes you back it becomes a conversation you can both reply to.
So messages come from two places. Some women Like you first and write. Many more answer a man who wrote well. If your plan is only the first, you are using a small part of the app.
Check these first, in this order
Work through four things, because each depends on the one before it.
First, your settings. OkCupid only shows you women who fit your age, location and orientation settings and who are also looking for someone like you. If your range is tight, fewer women see you and fewer write. Widen your distance and age range one step at a time and check the feed after each change.
Second, your first picture. A woman stops on a clear, recent, well lit picture of your face with nobody else in it. A dark one, an old one or a group shot loses her before she reads anything.
Third, your written lines. On a site built around questions and written answers, a page with nothing specific gives her nothing to say. A scene from your week and one opinion give her something to write about.
Fourth, your match questions. Few answers means the percentage has little to work with, and answers shaped to please women pair you with women who suit a man you are not. Answer enough, and answer honestly.
Send the first one yourself
The fastest change is to stop waiting. Like women you would be glad to take for a drink and send an Intro with each Like.
Make the Intro short. OkCupid's own advice is to mention a picture or a detail from her page, avoid being too familiar, use good grammar and keep it to roughly 40 to 90 characters. It also says an Intro that just says "Hey" has an 84% chance of being ignored.
Pick one specific thing she wrote and react to it with a playful guess or a light tease. "The friend who plans every trip. Tour guide or tiny dictator?" is short, about her and easy to answer. Keep the frame and swap the detail, and each Intro stays personal without starting from zero.
Do not Like everyone
When messages are scarce, men often Like every woman in the feed, hoping something sticks. a dating coach's view is that an app seems to rate you partly on how selective you are, and he has coached plenty of men who got far better results after they became choosier.
Liking fewer women, picked with care, also protects your time. Every mutual Like is a conversation you then have to keep going, and a woman you did not care about is a chat you will let die.
The pop-up and the Discover hint
Even a quiet account gets some signals. When a Like goes both ways, OkCupid tells you, and people who Like you tend to show up sooner in your Discover.
So the first women in your Discover deserve a proper look, not a flick past. Some of them Liked you already, and a good Intro to one of them has the best odds you will get all week.
Reply the same day and suggest a plan
When a woman does answer, the conversation needs to go somewhere. Reply the same day, keep it light and bring up a drink early as a playful idea. coach gets from a first message to a phone number in about four to seven messages.
Men who let a good chat run for weeks end up as her pen pal, and pen pals rarely get the date.
What Premium will and will not do
Premium shows you everyone who Likes you, and it gives you unlimited Likes. That can save time if women are already Liking you. It does not add women to your feed, and it cannot make a quiet page louder. Fix the four things above on the free version first.
A two week reset
Spend one weekend on the page. Replace the weakest picture, rewrite your lines around one scene and one opinion, and widen your settings by a step.
Then run two weeks. Send a short Intro to a few women a day, each built on one detail. Count women you Liked, mutual Likes, chats that started and dates you set. If mutual Likes rise, the page is working. If they rise and the chats die, work on your replies and your plan. If almost nothing rises, change one picture or one line at a time, so you learn which edit mattered.
