Almost every major dating app has some. Bumble and Badoo list the longest sets. They include in-app video and voice calls, Photo Verification, a tool that blurs possibly explicit images, a scam flagger, and Block, Report and Unmatch. Hinge, OkCupid and happn offer a verification badge and reporting. None of them can vouch for a stranger's character, so the tools work best when you use them before the first date.
What each site lists
Bumble lists in-app video and voice calls, Photo Verification and ID verification. It also lists Snooze mode, Private Detector, Block and Report, Unmatch and Deception Detector.
Private Detector blurs images that may be explicit. Deception Detector is an AI tool that flags scams. Bumble also says a global team works 24/7 to look for fake profiles, spam and activity that breaks its Community Guidelines.
Badoo's list is close to Bumble's. It has Photo Verification and in-app video and voice calls, plus a way to hide your page. Private Detector, Block and Report, Unmatch and Deception Detector are there too. It also says a team monitors the app around the clock.
Hinge offers voluntary Selfie Verification, a quick video selfie that earns a badge. Hinge says the badge does not promise the safety of a particular user. It also says conversations on its platform are subject to Safe Message Filters, and its Safe Dating Advice tells members never to send money and to keep conversations on the app.
OkCupid offers Photo Verification by video selfie, with a liveness check and a face comparison. It keeps only the verified or not result and not the face template.
happn lets members get a certified profile by mimicking a head gesture on video, which is compared to their photos. Certified profiles show a black badge.
The comparison
| App | Verification | Other tools listed |
|---|---|---|
| Bumble | Photo and ID verification | In-app calls, Snooze mode, Private Detector, Deception Detector, Block, Report, Unmatch |
| Badoo | Photo Verification | In-app calls, hide your page, Private Detector, Deception Detector, Block, Report, Unmatch |
| Hinge | Voluntary Selfie Verification badge | Safe Message Filters, Safe Dating Advice, reporting |
| OkCupid | Video selfie with liveness check | Keeps only the result, not the face template |
| happn | Certified profile with a black badge | Reporting and blocking |
What the tools do
A badge ties a face to a live person. In-app calls let you hear a voice before you share a number. Block, Report and Unmatch end a conversation that has gone wrong. Blurring and scam flags catch some problems before you read them.
Notice what is missing from that list: anything about who the woman is. A badge means the face matches the photos, and it does not tell you her age, her intentions or her honesty.
How to use them as a man
Use the in-app call before the first date. A ten-minute video chat inside the app costs nothing and shows you that the woman is the one in the photos. A match who avoids every call and every plan is telling you something. You do not have to accuse anyone. Suggest a short video call as a normal step before meeting, and see how she takes it.
Keep the conversation on the app until you have met. Hinge's own advice is to keep conversations there and never send money, and the same rule applies on every app. Gift cards, crypto and "a small favor" are the usual first requests from a scam.
Meet somewhere public, tell a friend where you will be, and plan the venue near your own place, which is a dating coach's rule for online dates. A venue you know is easier to leave and easier to judge.
Use your own badge too
A woman reading your page runs the same checks you do. If the app offers a badge, take it. It removes a doubt she was already holding, and it costs a short video.
Where the tools stop
Apps act after the fact. Someone behaves badly, you report it, and the team reviews it. Your report helps the next man, and nothing replaces your own caution before you meet someone.
Pick the app that fits the women you want to meet, turn on every safety tool it offers, and treat a badge as one fact among several.
