No dating app can promise you are safe in India, and none should be trusted to do that job for you. Of the big apps, Bumble lists the most safety tools. They include photo verification, ID verification and in-app video and voice calls. Hinge offers a selfie badge. Pick one of those, use its checks, and treat your own habits as the real protection.

What safe means for a man

Most safety advice online is written for women. A man's risks are a little different.

The common ones are money requests, fake accounts and blackmail over an explicit photo. He is also exposed when he gives out his number, workplace or address too early, or meets a stranger without knowing who she is.

Those are the risks to measure an app against, so ask what each app offers against them.

What the apps list

All of this comes from what the apps say about themselves, so it describes the tools, not how well they work.

Hinge offers an optional selfie badge. It shows that a person's photos match a live picture of her face. Hinge says no verification process is foolproof and that it does not run identity or criminal background checks on everyone.

Bumble offers photo verification and ID verification. It also has video and voice calls inside the app, a tool that blurs explicit images, and a scam detector backed by human moderators.

Tinder offers photo verification with a blue check, and says a fraud team and its Face Check tool work against fake accounts.

Some of these tools are offered only in certain countries or have been tested in some markets first. Before you rely on one, open the app's safety screens and see what it actually shows you in India.

What a badge proves

A verification badge answers one question. Is the woman in the photos the woman running the account?

It does not tell you her intentions, her age or her history. It will not stop a real person from lying to you, or from asking for money once she has your trust. Hinge and Tinder both say as much about their own badges.

The in-app call is the most useful tool for you. A short video call before you share a phone number lets you see and hear her, and it shows what a badge cannot, which is how she talks and whether there is any chemistry.

The habits that matter more than the app

A few habits do most of the work on every app.

Never send money to someone you have not met, whatever the reason sounds like. There is no honest version of that request.

Never send anything explicit with your face in it to someone you have not met in person. That one rule prevents the most damaging kind of blackmail.

Be wary of anyone who wants to leave the app quickly, asks personal questions early, or always has a reason she cannot do a video call. Those three together are a script.

Keep your employer, address and daily routine out of early chats.

Meeting safely

Choose a busy public place for the first date, at a normal hour, and pick it yourself. Tell a friend where you are going and when you expect to be home, and arrange your own way there and back.

Do not accept a plan that moves you somewhere private or isolated on the first meeting. A woman who is real and interested will agree to a coffee.

If something feels wrong at any point, leave. Report her through the app and unmatch. The report tools exist because other men have hit the same problem.

Fake accounts and your own judgment

a dating coach points out that in major US cities Tinder carries a lot of fake profiles and that Hinge tends to be better. That is his experience of one country, not a measurement of India.

What carries over is the habit of judging an app where you live. Look at the first twenty women who appear. If most have several photos from different places and say something specific, the app is probably a fair place to spend your evenings. If most look empty or too polished, try another.

How to choose

If safety tools decide it for you, start with Bumble and use its calls, or Hinge with its selfie badge, and follow the habits above. If you want the best use of your time, safety is only one factor. Choose the app people in your city actually use, then protect yourself on it.

A careful man on a busy app is safer than a man who relies on the badge of a quiet one.
