There is no single worst country, because the hardest places share the same traits. Look for a heavily male population. Look for local men who react badly when a stranger approaches a woman, and for women who are guarded for good reason. Look for laws that punish dating or public affection. And watch for a setting where you just do not feel drawn to approach. A country can be beautiful and still be a poor place to meet women.

Coaches who have run workshops across many countries describe the same handful of problems again and again. Here are the factors, with examples travelers commonly report.

Factor 1: A lopsided ratio of men to women

When far more men than women live in a place, the women get constant attention and the competition is fierce. Several Gulf states are the standard example, because large numbers of male workers live there. Your odds on any given night are lower, simply because every woman has been approached by dozens of men that week.

Factor 2: Local men who punish approaching

Some women in a country welcome a friendly conversation, and the trouble comes from the men around them. In places where public approach is seen as an insult to a woman's family or to local men, filming or approaching can bring real hostility. That includes threats online and in person. Even when the women are receptive, the cost to you is not worth it.

Factor 3: Guarded women

In some countries, women have good reasons to be wary of strange men in public, because harassment is common. A woman there who assumes a man approaching her on the street is a threat is acting sensibly. For a decent local man, that makes the first ten seconds very hard. A foreign visitor is sometimes read more kindly, but not always.

Reports from coaches who have taught in large South Asian cities describe exactly this: local men struggle with that wall, while visitors have an easier time. Men who learn a calm, non-threatening approach still do well there, which shows that skill matters even where the odds are poor.

Factor 4: Cold receptions in specific cities

Some places are fine for the country as a whole and cold in particular cities. A common report from travelers is that women from one South American country were warm and open when met abroad, and noticeably more reserved at home. The same can be true of a country that suits every other part of life.

Factor 5: Your own motivation

Approaching takes energy, and energy follows attraction. Some men travel to famous romantic cities and find they never want to approach, because the style of dress or the look of the crowd does not draw them. That is a personal matter, not a flaw in the city. If you do not feel pulled to talk to anyone, you will not.

Factor 6: The hit and miss countries

A few countries are great in one setting and poor in another. A large archipelago nation, for example, has big, modern cities and rural areas where customs are very different. Women from a global city behave much like women anywhere. Women from a more traditional region may not date casually at all. Check which part you are visiting.

Factor 7: The law

Some countries treat casual relationships, public affection or sex outside marriage as crimes. Read your destination's rules before you go. No date is worth a night in a cell.

What makes a country good instead

The best places tend to be the opposite on every point. The ratios are balanced and women enjoy talking to strangers. Nobody minds an approach, there is no legal risk, and you find the city attractive. English or an easy second language also helps. A good place is not about the nationality of the women. It is about how safe and normal it is to talk to them.

How to choose your trip

Before you book:

  1. Check the ratio and the culture of the city, not only the country.
  2. Read recent traveler reports about approaching in public.
  3. Learn the local laws about dating and public behavior.
  4. Plan your first evening so you do not arrive with nothing arranged.
  5. Be honest about your motivation. Pick a place where you want to talk to people.

Skill travels with you

The strongest answer to a difficult country is a skill you can carry anywhere. A man who can start a warm, relaxed conversation does better in a hard place than a nervous man in an easy one. That is the point of a Cold Approach Bootcamp: two four-hour blocks a day in the field, in Miami or New York, with a coach beside you. If you want to discuss a trip you are planning or the skills you want to build first, a call with one of our coaches is a good place to start.
