Do not chase her and do not interrogate her. Give her a few days of room, keep living your own week, stay warm and normal whenever you do talk, and then ask one calm question about what has changed. If the distance started after a fight, let the fight cool first and repair it before you ask anything bigger. Most of this comes down to staying steady while you find out which kind of distant she is.

First, work out which kind of distant this is

A girlfriend can pull away for very different reasons, and the right response depends on which one you have.

  • Busy or stressed. Work, exams or a family problem has eaten her energy. She is short with everyone, but still warm when you are actually together.
  • Hurt. The coldness started after something specific: a fight, a comment, a plan you cancelled. Ask yourself what happened in the two days before it began.
  • Checked out. Her answers shrink, she stops telling you about her day, plans turn into "we'll see", and nothing you do changes her mood.

Signs of an emotionally distant girlfriend include shorter texts, fewer jokes, no more stories about her day, pulling away when you reach for her, and a flat reaction to good news. One of these on a bad Tuesday means nothing. Several of them across a week or more means something is going on.

The first week: ease off a notch, do not vanish

There is a simple test for a woman who is pulling back. Stop pushing and see whether she returns the effort. If she does, nothing was wrong. If she does not, you have learned something real without begging for it.

In practice, that means shorter texts. It means no second text when the first one is unanswered. It means you make your own plans for the week: the gym, a friend, a project you have been putting off. You stay friendly, and you do not go silent to punish her.

a dating coach describes why the opposite fails. When she asks for more of your time and you hand it over, she is happier for a while and a little less attracted each time. Each extra thing you give while she is pulling away makes you look less like the man she picked.

What to say when you do talk

Pick a calm moment, in person or on a call, not by text and not in the middle of an argument. Say one sentence and then stop talking:

"You've seemed far away lately. I miss you. Is something up, or am I reading it wrong?"

Then listen. Do not defend yourself, correct her version of events, or argue with the answer. My advice for tense conversations is to turn the question around and get her talking about what she feels and why, so you are the one listening instead of the one under questioning.

Avoid "Why are you ignoring me?", "You never make time for me" and "Do you still love me?" Each one asks her to comfort you, and that rarely brings her closer.

coach also warns that couples in trouble spend more time discussing the relationship than having one. After one honest talk, change her mood instead of her mind. Plan something easy and good: a walk, a dinner at her favorite place, an evening with nothing on the calendar.

If she went distant after a fight

Give it a day or two. A woman who is still angry is not ready to hear your point of view, however fair it is.

Then take your share of it plainly: "I was short with you on Saturday and I'm sorry." Say your part and stop there. Do not reopen the argument to win it, because a fight is over when you are both warm again, not when someone has been proven right.

There is a line worth keeping. Complaining that you feel ignored or insecure rarely helps. Calling out real disrespect, once and calmly, does. If she said something cruel, tell her it was not okay. If she is simply cold, wait.

Check your own side

My list of the ways men wreck a relationship includes laziness and neediness. Look at those two honestly.

Have you stopped going out? Stopped flirting and started talking only about errands? Dropped the gym because you no longer have someone to impress? Have you been checking your phone for her answer, or giving her your whole week?

Women often work to a tighter timeline than men, and a woman will pull back when "where is this going" has stayed vague for a long time. If you have been together a while and you have never said what you want, she may be waiting on you. Say it.

None of this means her distance is your fault. It means these are the parts you can fix, and they are the only parts you control.

When distance is her answer

Suppose you have been warm, asked once, changed what you could, and several weeks later she is still cold and vague about plans. Believe what you are seeing.

Say it without heat: "I want to be with someone who wants to be here. Is that you?" If she cannot say yes, you have your answer, and walking away with your dignity beats being kept around.

One caution from My coaching of a client in this spot. Do not give an ultimatum you do not mean. He drew a hard line he did not believe in, folded when she pushed back, and finished no better off than before he spoke.
