Nobody opens with a thousand pounds. The first ask is forty. A taxi. A phone bill. A top up so she can keep talking to you tonight.

It is small on purpose. Small enough that saying no makes you sound like a man who counts forty pounds, and after three weeks of good conversation you do not want to be that man. That feeling is not an accident. It is the whole design.

Section 01

The first ask is a test, not a request

The money is almost beside the point at that stage. What is being tested is whether you will move money at all.

If you send it, two things happen. She learns that you can be moved, and you learn that you are the kind of man who helps her. Both of those make the second ask easier, and the second ask is always larger. Men who lose serious amounts almost never sent a serious amount first. They sent forty, then two hundred, then the rest.

So the size of the first ask is the least useful thing about it. Treat any request for money from someone you have not met as the same event, whether it is for a coffee or a flight.

Section 02

Why talking it down is the mistake

The instinct of a reasonable man is to negotiate. Send half. Offer to book the ticket himself instead of sending cash. Say he will help this once but not again. Ask for more detail about what happened.

Every one of those is a yes. You have agreed in principle and are now discussing terms, and the person on the other end has had that conversation hundreds of times. They have an answer for the half. They have a reason the ticket has to be bought at their end. They have a new emergency for next week that is nothing like this one.

You cannot out-argue someone who does this for a living. You can only decline to start.

Section 03

The details that give it away

The story will be sympathetic and urgent at the same time, which real problems rarely are. A parent in hospital. Money stuck in customs. A bank account locked while she is abroad. A chance to get in on something early that closes on Friday.

The payment method matters more than the story. Gift cards, crypto, a transfer to a friend's account, an app nobody uses, a wallet address sent as a picture. All of those exist for one reason: they cannot be reversed. A real woman with a real emergency has a bank account with her own name on it and a friend she would ask first.

One more thing to notice. The urgency always arrives at the worst hour for thinking. Late at night, on a weekend, right before you go into work.

Section 04

What stopping actually looks like

It is quieter than men expect. You do not owe a speech.

Do not explain what you worked out. Do not send a final message telling her she has been caught. Do not ask for one honest answer, because you will get a very good one and you will be back where you started.

Stop replying. Block the account. Report it in the app, which takes ten seconds and is the only thing that protects the next man. If she has your number, block that too, and change nothing else in your life.

If she is real and you were wrong, you have lost a woman who asked a near stranger for money. That is not much of a loss.

Section 05

If you have already sent something

Say the amount out loud to one person you trust. That is not sentimental advice. Secrecy is what lets this run for another six months.

Then stop sending, completely, including the payment that supposedly releases the earlier ones. Contact your bank the same day, because recent transfers can sometimes be pulled back and old ones almost never can. Report it to the app and to the police or the fraud line where you live. Keep the messages rather than deleting them in embarrassment, because they are the record.

Ignore anyone who appears afterwards offering to recover your money for a fee. That is the same trade being sold to you twice, often by the same people.

Section 06

The version where she is real

Sometimes she is. You have met twice, you like her, and she is genuinely short this month.

It is still a bad idea, and for an ordinary reason rather than a suspicious one. Money that early sets the shape of the thing. You become the man who helps, she becomes the woman who needs it, and neither of you chose that on purpose. If you want to be generous, be generous in ways that do not create a debt. Pay for the dinner you invited her to. Drive her home. Leave the transfers until you actually know each other.

If she takes that badly, you have learned something useful in the cheapest way available.

Section 07

When this keeps finding you

If this has happened more than once, it is usually not bad luck. It is a profile and a way of talking that reads as available and unguarded, and the accounts that do this for money are very good at spotting it.

That is one of the quieter reasons men hand the apps over. Our team rebuilds the photos and the whole profile, then runs the apps and the conversations day to day, so the sorting happens in the first few messages instead of after a month of feeling. Accounts like these get closed out before there is anything attached to them, and the women who fit what you actually asked for are the ones who reach your calendar.

You are not bad at judging people. You were being worked on by someone with practice, in the one area where being kind is held against you.
