Your Turn Limits is a Hinge feature that pauses new likes when too many matches are waiting for your reply. Until you answer some of those chats or end them, you cannot send new likes or receive them. Hinge built it to deal with one of the biggest complaints it hears from daters: matches who never write back.

How the limit works

Hinge's help page puts it simply. When too many people are waiting for a response from you, you will not be able to send or receive new likes until you take action with your current matches.

There are two ways to take action. You can carry on the conversation in a chat where it is your turn to reply. Or you can close the conversation with someone you no longer expect to connect with.

As you get close to the limit, a progress bar appears above your Matches. If you hit it, a pop-up tells you to either respond to a match or end a conversation.

The rule covers everyone with too many people waiting, subscribers included. Your matches are not notified when you hit it.

Why Hinge added it

Hinge says it introduced the feature to solve one of the biggest challenges daters told it about: having matches who do not respond. It tested Your Turn Limits and says the feature increased responses on the app.

Its stated goal is to get people focusing on the connections they already have instead of collecting new ones. That is a dating app telling its users to do less collecting and more talking, and it happens to be good advice.

Your Turn and Your Turn Limits are different things

Your Turn is the gentler feature. It reminds you when it is your turn to reply to someone.

Your Turn Limits is what happens when too many people are waiting on you at once. The reminder becomes a gate, and new likes stop until you deal with the backlog.

A single Your Turn reminder is just a reminder. The progress bar above your Matches is what tells you the limit is getting close.

What it tells you about how you use the app

Most men who hit the limit are not rude. They are overloaded. They match with more women than they can talk to properly, reply when they feel like it, and let the rest sit.

The limit is Hinge noticing that. And it is worth taking the hint, because a pile of unanswered chats was never helping you anyway.

a dating coach's approach to app leads is useful here. He sets aside short blocks of time, usually two a day, and handles the most valuable conversations first: the women he likes most, and the women closest to an actual date. Only when those are handled does he go and get more matches. Run the app that way and the limit rarely comes up.

How to clear it without wasting anyone's time

Open your Matches and sort the waiting chats in your head into three groups.

The first group is women you genuinely want to see. Reply to them properly, with something that moves toward a plan. The point of messaging on an app is to get off the app and onto a date, so a good reply here often suggests a drink or asks for her number.

The second group is conversations that were never going anywhere. One-word answers, a chat that died days ago, a match you do not remember making. End those. Hinge's own pages describe unmatching as the way to remove a conversation that no longer feels right, and they note that it is permanent.

The third group is the unsure ones. Give each a real reply and see what comes back. If nothing does, they move into the second group next time.

Habits that keep you under the limit

Match with fewer women, more deliberately. A like should go to a woman you would actually take out, not to anyone who looks fine in the first photo.

Reply the same day where you can. Chats cool quickly, and a quick answer keeps a good one alive.

Move good conversations off the app sooner. Once there has been real back and forth, suggest something specific. Each chat that turns into a plan or a polite ending frees up room.

And let dead chats go. Keeping them open out of politeness costs you new likes and gives the woman on the other end nothing.

The short version

Your Turn Limits is Hinge pausing your new likes until you deal with the matches already waiting on you. Reply to the women you want to see, end the chats that are finished, and it lifts. Treat it as a nudge toward running fewer, better conversations, because that is what gets men dates.
