We Met is Hinge's follow-up question after you and a match exchange phone numbers. A few days later, Hinge asks whether you went on a date and whether she is the type of person you would like to see again. It uses what it learns from your answers to make better recommendations in the future.

How We Met works

Hinge's help page lays out the sequence. A few days after you exchange phone numbers with a match, Hinge asks if you went on a date. If you did, it asks whether your date is the type of person you would like to see again.

If you say you do not want a second date, Hinge says it will consider that when recommending new people to you. The whole point, in Hinge's words, is to learn about members' dates so it can provide better recommendations.

Hinge's trust and safety page describes the same check-in. It adds that if the answer is no, you are given the chance to tell Hinge about any inappropriate behavior.

If you have not been on the date yet

Plenty of men get the question before the date has happened. Plans slip, or the drink is set for next week.

Hinge says that if you have not gone on a date, you can let it know if that changes at any time. You do this through We Met in your Matches: swipe the match's name to the left to reveal the options, and We Met is one of them.

So there is no need to guess or answer early. Say you have not met yet, then update it once you have.

Reporting a bad date through We Met

We Met is also one of Hinge's safety tools. Its help page says that if your date is disrespectful in any way, you can report that person through We Met.

From inside the conversation, tap the three dots in the top right corner. The options Hinge shows there include We Met, Unmatch, Hide and Report.

Hinge's reporting page says reporting is confidential and permanent: you will not see each other's profiles again.

Why honest answers help you

We Met is where Hinge hears about what happened off the app, not just what you tapped on it. Hinge's help page on automated decisions also lists who you might exchange phone numbers with among the things it uses to recommend people.

So your answers feed the same system that fills your feed. Say yes to a second date with a woman you liked, and no to one you did not, and Hinge has a real signal about your taste instead of a guess.

Answering "yes" to be polite gives it the wrong signal, and skipping the question gives it none. Hinge says the feedback is private and never shared with your matches, so there is no reason to soften it.

What a "no" should teach you too

Hinge learns from your answer. You should learn from the date.

If you keep answering "no" because the women were not what you expected, look at how you are choosing. Read pages properly before you like, and have a short phone or video call before the date where you can. A ten-minute call tells you more than a week of texting and saves you evenings with women you would not have picked.

If the problem is the other way round, and you wanted a second date but did not get one, be honest about why. a dating coach's view is that the most common reason a man does not get a second date is not one wrong move. It is that the date was boring: an interview about jobs and hometowns with no teasing, no flirting and no tension. Fix that and the second dates follow.

Getting to the point where We Met shows up

We Met is triggered by swapping numbers, which means the chat did its job. That is worth remembering.

The point of messaging on the app is to get off the app and onto a date. Once there has been some real back and forth, suggest getting a drink sometime, then swap numbers. Moving to text is like starting a fresh conversation, so pick up something you joked about on the app before you settle the night.

Do that consistently and We Met stops being an occasional prompt. It becomes a regular question about dates you actually went on.

The short version

We Met is Hinge asking, a few days after you swap numbers, whether you went on the date and whether you would see her again. Answer honestly, update it if the date has not happened yet, and use it to report anyone who was disrespectful. Your answers stay private and help Hinge make better recommendations for you.
