You are away for two weeks. You leave with three decent conversations going and a vague plan to keep them warm from the beach.

What actually happens is that you answer well for two days, patchily for three, and not at all after that. You come home, open the app on the Sunday night, and find a list of women who have all stopped expecting anything from you.

Then you spend the next month deciding the apps are not working, without ever connecting that month to the holiday.

Section 01

She was not waiting for you

This is the part men get wrong, and it is not cynicism, it is just arithmetic.

A woman you had been texting for four days does not hold the conversation open for a fortnight. She was talking to other men at the same time. One of them suggested a drink in the week you were gone. By the time you write, the version of her who was interested has moved on, and nothing you send is going to bring that particular week back.

So the message you write from the airport, the one that starts with an apology for the gap, is doing a job that cannot be done. It is not badly written. It is late.

Section 02

The backlog you come home to

The other half of the cost lands on the Sunday you get back.

You now have a pile. Old conversations that need reviving, new matches from while you were away, and no idea which of them are worth anything. It is exactly the kind of task a tired man postpones, so it gets postponed, and the pile grows another week.

Most men do not restart properly after a holiday. They restart badly, get nothing, and quietly stop opening the app for a month. That is the real price of the two weeks, and it is paid in the six that follow.

Section 03

What a managed account does instead

Here is the actual difference, and it is not that somebody is more diligent than you. It is that going away becomes a decision rather than a drift.

There are two choices, and either one is fine. What is not fine is the third thing, which is what happens by default when nobody decides anything.

Section 04

Choice one: it keeps running

The apps carry on. Conversations get answered while they are warm, new matches get worked, and the evenings get proposed for the week you land rather than the week you are gone.

So the first Thursday after you get back already has something on it. You walk off a plane into a calendar rather than into a backlog, which is the single best week the apps will ever give you, because you are relaxed, you are tanned, and you have something to talk about.

Where you are is not a secret from the women you are talking to either. A man who says he is away until the eighth and suggests the ninth is being straightforward, not evasive. The whole thing works better when the timing is said out loud.

Section 05

Choice two: it pauses on purpose

Sometimes running through is wrong. You are somewhere with your family, you are getting married in three days, you are on a trip where the last thing you want is a message about your evening on the twelfth.

Then it pauses, and pausing properly is a real piece of work rather than an absence of one. Live conversations get closed cleanly instead of abandoned. Nobody is left reading unanswered messages and deciding you are rude. When you come back, restarting is a decision you make on a Monday, not a pile you dig out of.

The difference between a pause and going cold is the same difference as between resigning and not turning up.

Section 06

Business travel is the same problem, more often

Holidays are the obvious case. Work trips are the expensive one, because they happen eight times a year and nobody thinks of them as a break.

Four days in another city with client dinners every night does exactly what the fortnight in Greece does, only quieter and repeatedly. If your apps die a little every time you travel, and you travel monthly, you never accumulate anything. You are always in week one.

That is a scheduling problem wearing the costume of a dating problem.

Section 07

What you say before you go

The whole thing takes one message, and it is worth sending before you leave rather than from the departure gate.

The dates you are away. Whether you want evenings booked for the week you get back. Whether you want it all paused instead. Whether there is anybody live you want handled carefully rather than generically.

That is it. One message, and the fortnight stops costing you anything.

Section 08

The short version

Two weeks away kills a self run account, and the damage shows up as a dead month afterwards rather than as anything you can see at the time.

Handed over, it is a choice. Our team redoes your photos and your whole profile, then runs the swiping and the texting day to day in your voice and gets evenings onto your calendar, including the ones waiting for you when you land. Your first date within a week, or we keep working.

You go away. The thing you were building does not.
