What Are Consumables on Bumble?

Consumables are single-use paid features on Bumble that you buy upfront, in the quantity you choose, and use whenever you are ready. Bumble lists three of them: SuperSwipe, Spotlight and Notes. They are separate from the Boost, Premium and Premium+ subscriptions, so you can buy one without signing up for a plan. Your everyday swiping and messages work the same as before.

A SuperSwipe lets a woman know you are especially interested in her before you match. Bumble says she sees a clear indication that you went beyond a regular swipe. You send one by tapping the star icon on the People tab.

A Spotlight pushes you to the front of the line for a set period of time, so more people in your area see you while it is active. You start one from the Spotlight option on the main menu.

A Note, which Bumble used to call a Compliment, lets you send a short written message before you match. It is meant to be about something that caught your eye on her page, such as a photo or a prompt. You send one by tapping the heart in a speech bubble.

SuperSwipe and Spotlight packs are both listed on the Pay plan page, and the top of that page shows how many of each you have left.

A subscription changes how the app works for you every day. Boost adds a weekly allowance of SuperSwipes and Spotlights. It also lets you undo a left swipe and rematch with expired connections. Premium adds the Liked You queue, advanced filters, Incognito Mode and Travel Mode. Premium+ adds photo insights, a weekly allowance of Notes, and more SuperSwipes and Spotlights. Plans renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date.

A consumable does one thing, once. There is no renewal and no plan to remember to cancel. Bumble says that, generally, the bigger the pack the better the value. That may be true per item, but it only matters if you actually use them.

Pick by the problem you actually have, not by what sounds most impressive.

Say a fair share of the women who see you like you back, but not enough women are seeing you. A Spotlight addresses exactly that. If there is one woman whose attention you want and you worry she will scroll past, a SuperSwipe is the tool. If you have a genuine, specific thing to say to her before you match, a Note is the better buy, because it carries words and the other two do not.

A good Note reads like the start of a conversation, not a compliment on her looks. If her prompt says she makes the best carbonara in the city, tell her you doubt it and ask what she puts in it. Keep it to a line or two, with one easy question, and make it prove you read past her first photo.

If you regularly hit the daily like limit and women are liking you back, a consumable is the wrong answer. That situation calls for a subscription. Bumble's pages differ on which plan lifts the limit, so check what the Pay plan page lists before you pay.

It is tempting to take the bigger pack because it works out cheaper per item. Start small anyway.

Use a small pack over two or three weeks and keep a simple note of what happened. Did the women you SuperSwiped match back more often than the ones you liked normally? Did the Spotlight evening bring in more matches than an ordinary one, and did any of them become a real conversation? Did anyone reply to a Note?

There is no need to rush a small pack, either. A plan's weekly allowance expires and refills on the weekday you first subscribed. Consumables are different. Bumble describes them as features you use whenever you are ready. So spend each one on the right woman or the right evening, not on the first chance you get.

Once you have an answer, buying the larger pack is an easy decision instead of a hopeful one.

Every consumable changes who sees you or how you reach out. None of them change what a woman sees when she gets to you.

That part decides most of the result. Start with a clear, well-lit lead photo with nothing hiding your face. Add a few photos from different days that show what your weeks look like. Write answers specific enough to reply to. Those will do more than any pack. So will a first line that picks up on something real, and a plan suggested after a few good exchanges instead of a week of small talk.

Fix those first, because they are free. Then the consumables have something worth amplifying.
