The best cheap dates in New York are walks, parks, markets and bookshops, with one inexpensive stop for a drink or a snack. A man who meets women in person, in the field, can invite her to any of them on the spot. The city is full of free things to look at, and a walk through a good neighborhood costs nothing. The aim is to have a good time with her, not to spend a lot, and a cheap date that you chose on purpose beats an expensive one you picked by default.
Why cheap works
On a first date you are finding out whether you enjoy each other. A long dinner is expensive and traps you for two hours before you know whether you like her. A short, easy plan costs little and makes it easy for her to say yes.
It also lets you extend the date if it goes well. a dating coach's rule is to have a second stop in mind. In New York there is a coffee shop, a bar and an ice cream place within a couple of blocks of almost anywhere.
Walks that cost nothing
A walk is the easiest date in the city. You are side by side, pauses feel natural, and the setting gives you things to point at.
- A stretch of Central Park or Washington Square Park.
- The High Line, which is free, though it can be crowded on a warm weekend.
- The waterfront paths along the Hudson or the East River.
- The walkway across the Brooklyn Bridge, followed by a short wander through Brooklyn.
- The Staten Island Ferry, which is free and gives you a view of the harbor and the skyline.
Keep it loose. Pick one place and let the date decide whether it continues.
Markets, bookshops and free events
A market or bookshop gives you something to do with your hands and easy things to react to, such as which book looks ridiculous or what to taste. You can browse without spending, and buy one small thing if you want.
Many museums have free or discounted hours on certain evenings, and the city has free concerts and outdoor events in warm months. Check the times before you go, and keep a museum for a second or third date.
One cheap drink, in the right place
If you want a drink, pick a bar with booths or a couch, so you can sit beside her. Go early or on a quiet night. A happy hour keeps the cost down, and a small neighborhood bar is usually calmer than a famous one.
Skip places where you have to shout. If the talk is flat, you end the date at the first stop and nobody has to explain.
Cheap is not the same as stingy
There is a real difference between keeping costs low and being stingy. a dating coach makes the point that spending money with a woman, on an experience you share, is smart and not needy. What looks bad is counting every dollar, arguing over a small bill or refusing a reasonable extra.
So pick a cheap plan, and then be relaxed about the small costs that come up. If she wants to stop for ice cream, buy the ice cream. A ten-dollar decision should not change how she sees you.
What to skip
Movies and shows. You sit side by side facing a screen and cannot talk. A formal dinner where you are locked in for two hours. Anything with a hard end time, which puts a ceiling on a date that might have gone well.
Plan it like this
Choose a neighborhood close to where you both are, because a long ride cuts into the date. Pick a walk or a market for the first hour, one cheap drink or snack for the second, and know where you would go next.
If the date goes well, you have an easy reason to continue. If it does not, you have spent very little.
