Watch her effort, not her excuses. A woman who is interested but playing hard to get still puts something in. She teases you, asks you questions, and offers another day when she cannot make the one you picked. A woman who is not interested gives you the same polite nothing every time. If you cannot tell which one you have, make one clear plan and see whether she meets you partway.
Why the two look alike from a distance
Both women reply slowly sometimes. Both say they are busy. Both can leave a plan hanging for a few days. That is why men get stuck asking whether she is not interested or just playing hard to get. The surface behavior matches, and the reason underneath does not.
The difference is in what she does around the delay. A woman who likes you but wants to see how you handle a little friction is still handing you something to work with. A woman who does not like you is handing you nothing, and she is being nice about it.
Signs she is interested and testing you
She teases back. When you tease her, she has a comeback instead of a flat "haha." That is her enjoying the game.
She asks about you and remembers the answers. Interest shows up as curiosity, even when she is acting unbothered.
She offers another option. "I can't Thursday, how about Saturday?" is the clearest sign there is. She is not turning you down. She is moving the plan.
She pushes on you a little. She may disagree with something you said just to see whether you hold your ground or fold. A man who stays relaxed and a bit playful usually passes. A man who gets defensive or starts apologizing usually does not.
Her body stays warm while her words stay light. In person, she stands close, keeps eye contact, laughs, and finds reasons to touch your arm, even while she says she is not sure about you.
Signs it is a polite no
She never suggests a time. You propose, she says "maybe" or "I'm slammed," and the plan goes nowhere on her end, again and again.
Her replies stay short and ask nothing back. You are doing the work in every conversation.
She is friendly and gives you no openings. She chats when you start it and lets it die when you stop.
She cancels and does not rebook. One cancellation is life. Two with no new day offered is her answer.
A rule of thumb: interest costs effort, and a woman who is interested spends some of hers, even while she pretends not to. If the whole thing runs on your effort, you are looking at a polite no.
The one-plan test
Instead of guessing for weeks, run a simple test. Pick a specific plan with a day, a time and a place, and send it once. "Thursday at 7, the wine bar on Fifth. Does that work?"
Then watch what she does. If she says yes, you have your answer. If she says she cannot but gives you another time, you have your answer. If she says "maybe" or "I'll let you know" and comes back with nothing, you also have your answer. Wait a day or two, send one relaxed follow-up with a different option, and stop if she does not take it.
You gave her a clean way to say yes, and she chose not to take it. That is clearer than any amount of reading into her texts.
What to do while you wait
Do not interrogate her about how she feels. Do not ask her friends. Do not send three messages to see which one lands. All of that reads as a man who cannot hear no, and it cools down even a woman who liked you.
Stay warm and unbothered. Keep your own plans, keep meeting other women, and let her reach for you if she wants to. A man with a full week is easier to be interested in than a man guarding his phone.
When you still cannot tell
If you have run the test and still cannot read her, treat it as a no for now. That costs you very little. If she was interested and just slow, she will come back, and you lost nothing by living your life in the meantime. If she was not interested, you saved yourself a month.
One more thing. A no that is said out loud, even a soft one like "I don't think so," is a no. Pushing through it is not game. It is pressure, and it makes you less attractive and her less comfortable. The woman who is playing hard to get never needs you to override her words. She just needs you to stay steady while she decides.
