Raya is worth it for a man with an iPhone who wants a small, private app and is happy to pay a membership to use it. There is no free way to use it once you are in, the daily supply of people is limited, and whether you get accepted is not in your hands. If you want volume, or you are not willing to put real care into messaging the few matches you get, the mainstream dating apps will give you more for less.
What you are paying for
Raya's App Store listing describes a private community where people come to connect for dating, networking and friendship. Getting in means applying, and Raya's About page says applications need referrals and are judged by a membership committee.
Once you are accepted, you buy a membership to use the app. The listing offers 1, 6 or 12 month memberships that renew automatically, and it says you only get full functionality while one is active.
There are two levels. The standard Membership is the cheaper one. Raya+ costs more, and reviews of the app say it adds seeing who liked you, more people to look at each day, and unlimited likes. On top of either, Raya sells extras on their own: Skip the Wait, Direct Requests and Extra Likes.
What it does well
The appeal of Raya is the room itself.
Everyone in it applied and got through a committee, so the people you see were chosen rather than simply signed up. Members can also see each other's Instagram username and the accounts they both follow. That makes the app feel less anonymous than most, and it makes a woman on the other side less likely to be someone who is not who she says.
A small room also changes what a match means. When you only see a limited number of people a day, each one gets a proper look, from you and from her.
Where it falls short for men
The limits are real, and they cost you if you ignore them.
The supply is small. Reviews of the app say a standard membership comes with a limited number of people and likes each day. On a busy app you can make up for weak results with sheer volume. On Raya you cannot, so a weak set of pictures or a lazy first line costs you more than it would anywhere else.
The app is not only for dating. Raya describes itself as a place for dating, networking and friendship, so some of the people you see want something other than a date.
It runs only on iPhone. And the entry is out of your control. You can apply, but a committee and the referral requirement decide the rest, and nothing you buy changes that.
Is Raya+ worth it on top
Raya+ earns its price for one kind of man: the one who runs out of likes before he runs out of women he would genuinely like to meet.
If that is you, unlimited likes and seeing who liked you both turn into more conversations. If your likes on a standard membership rarely come back, Raya+ lets you send more of what is not working. Fix that first.
a dating coach's approach to paid upgrades fits here. Run it for the shortest period on offer, line up the dates it brought against the month before, and renew only if the difference is plain.
How to make a small pool pay off
On an app this size, what you do with each match matters more than how many you get.
Answer quickly. A woman who liked you today has a limited number of people in front of her too. A reply that arrives three days later is competing with everyone who answered sooner.
Make the first message about her. a dating coach's point about openers is that the generic ones, asking about her weekend or her favorite food, get generic replies or none at all. Take one detail from her page, react to it, and add a light guess about what kind of person she is. That gives her something to react to.
Then move toward meeting. Once she is clearly engaged, suggest a plan and swap numbers. Chatting for weeks with no plan wastes a match you cannot easily replace.
The honest test
Buy the shortest membership first, which is the 1 month option. Use it properly: answer every match the same day, send openers you actually thought about, and ask the women who engage to meet.
Then count dates. If Raya gave you dates with women you were glad to meet, it was worth the money for you, and renewing is an easy call. If a month produced a few matches and no dates, the membership was not the problem. The fix is in your pictures, your write-up and your opening line, and those are worth sorting before you pay for any app again.
