A little, at the very start. A tall or good-looking man gets more benefit of the doubt in the first few seconds, so the opener lands more softly. After that, looks stop doing the work. The conversation, the number and the date depend on how he talks, how calm he is and whether he asks for what he wants, and an average man can get better at all three.

What looks buy you

Looks buy a warmer first reaction. A woman who finds you good-looking is more likely to slow down for the hello, and a tall man is easier to notice across a street. That is real, and pretending it is not is a mistake.

It does not mean women decide in two seconds and nothing else counts. A preference on average is not a rule about the woman standing in front of you.

What looks cannot do

A good-looking man still has to keep the conversation going. Looks get a woman to listen for ten seconds. They do not give him anything to say in the eleventh.

They also do not remove the nerves. Many handsome men have had little reason to practice, so they have few reps. When a woman is cool, distracted or amused instead of delighted, they have no experience handling it and they fold. An average man who has done hundreds of approaches has met that response many times and does not panic.

a dating coach's line from his Los Angeles Bootcamp work applies to both: "Most guys lose the girl not because they did something wrong. They hesitated." Hesitation is not a looks problem.

Where the tall, handsome man still loses

The usual ways are the same as for anyone, and they are common among men who rely on their looks:

  • He waits to be noticed instead of speaking first.
  • He gets bored by a woman who is not instantly warm and leaves too soon.
  • He asks a string of questions and turns the chat into an interview.
  • He asks for her number without giving her a reason to give it.

What an average man controls

You cannot change your height. You can change nearly everything else she notices in the first minute.

  • Fit and grooming. Clothes that fit, a fresh haircut, clean shoes and controlled facial hair. A shorter man in a well-cut jacket looks sharper than a tall man in a baggy shirt.
  • Voice and pace. A clear, calm voice, a slower walk-up and a short opener. Calm reads as comfortable, and comfortable reads as attractive.
  • Posture and eye contact. Shoulders back and a warm look. You do not have to stare. You do have to look at her.
  • Conversation. Curiosity, a light tease and a short statement about yourself, instead of a list of questions.
  • A plan. A specific suggestion, like a coffee now, instead of a vague "we should hang out sometime."

Each of these is a skill, so each improves with repetition. That is good news if you feel you start from behind.

Do not announce your disadvantage

If you think you are short, plain, or not the type, do not say so. A line like "I know I am not the tallest guy" tells her that you have already given up. Stand straight, say your opener, and leave it alone.

If she does care about height, you will find out soon and you can move on without wasting a month. If she does not, you did not hand her a reason to start caring.

Reps beat the lottery of genetics

The strongest reason to start is that daygame rewards volume and feedback more than anything you were born with. Every approach teaches you something about your voice, your timing and what you do when a woman says no. A good-looking man who does ten approaches and an average man who does a hundred are not in the same place after a few months.

Sometimes the fix is small. A coach who watches you can see the one thing that is costing you, whether it is how you stand, how fast you talk or where your eyes go. Reps with feedback beat reps alone.

What a Bootcamp does for this

A Cold Approach Bootcamp has no skill floor, and every level is welcome. It runs in Miami and New York, in Group with no more than three students per coach, or in Private, fully 1-on-1 for one, two or three days. Each training day has two four-hour blocks in the field, with daygame and nightgame mixed to suit the student.

You get live coaching on every approach and feedback after every set, plus a written practice plan to take home.
