Text her when she can actually answer, keep each message short with one idea, make it worth a reply, and move to a call or a visit as soon as the conversation is warm. Text is the weakest way to build something over distance, so use it to set up the stronger things. Talking to a girl long distance is the same job as talking to any girl, with two extra problems: her clock and the lack of a next time.

Start with her clock

My fifth texting rule is simple: text when she can respond. That matters more across cities and time zones. If you send a message while she is asleep, it lands in a pile of everything else she wakes up to, and it gets lost.

He tells a story about this. He was traveling in a strange time zone and sent a text he knew usually worked to several women at once. Almost nobody answered. Most of them were asleep when it arrived. The text was not the problem. The timing was.

So find out when she is free. Ask about her routine, learn her work hours, and send your messages in her evening or her morning, when her phone is in her hand. A message she can answer in the moment gets answered. One she sees while rushing out of the house gets forgotten.

Short, one idea, easy to answer

Distance tempts men to write long, because they have so much to say and so little contact. Resist it. My rule is to keep messages short, with one or two ideas. A wall of text looks needy and is hard to match.

Instead of a paragraph about your week, send one good detail:

  • "I got on the wrong train this morning and ended up at a stop with one bench and a very serious goat. How was your Tuesday?"
  • "Your city just showed up on my weather app and it is miserable. I feel bad for you. A little."

Each message offers her a hook: a question, a joke, something to react to. Nothing in it needs a long essay back.

Do not turn it into an interview

When you do not see someone, the temptation is to ask question after question: what do you do, where do you eat, what music do you like. After a few, she feels like she is filling out a form.

Use statements, then leave room. coach also says to keep the tone informal and a little teasing, not businesslike. Tell her something small about your day and let her pick it up. Ask a real question every now and then, but let the conversation breathe.

Do not text all day

My description of low-value texting applies doubly here. Replying within seconds, sending messages all day, and writing long answers show that she is the center of your life and that you have little else going on.

You do not need to play a waiting game, and a fixed delay rule breaks down quickly. Just live your own day. Send something good when you have something good, and answer when you are free. Over distance, a few messages she enjoys beat twenty she skims.

Move to voice early

coach says in-person talk is best, a phone call is next, and text is the weakest. For a girl you cannot see, that ranking decides everything.

If a message is getting long, send a voice note. If the conversation has some energy, say "this is better on a call" and set a time. A call carries tone, humor and warmth, and it makes the whole thing feel real. My habit of having a call before a date also applies here, because a girl who has heard your voice shows up to a meeting far more excited.

Always point at a real meeting

Distance makes texting feel like a goal in itself. It is not. Without a plan to meet, the whole thing drifts into pen pal territory, and then it fades.

Use My sequence: a qualifier, a vague suggestion and a close. For example: "Do you ever travel for fun?" She says sometimes. "I am thinking about a weekend in your city next month. Would you be up for showing me the good coffee?" Then name a date, or ask what her month looks like.

Put it on the calendar. A visit gives both of you something to look forward to, and it gives your messages a purpose.

When she is slow to answer

If she replies less often than you would like, do not double text with a worried follow-up. coach says double texting out of nerves looks needy and draws attention to the message you doubt.

Give her room, and check what she is giving you. If she answers with something you can reply to, asks you questions and mentions seeing you, you are doing fine. If she gives short answers and never asks about you or mentions a meeting, you have your answer, and no clever text will change it.

The short version

Learn her clock. Send one idea at a time. Use voice when text runs out. Keep a visit in sight. If you do those four things, texting a girl long distance is not that different from texting any other woman you like, and it moves toward a real date.
