You matched, you texted for a week, and somewhere in there you stopped wanting to meet her. Or you met her, and by the walk to the station you already knew.
Now there is a message on your phone you do not want to answer, and you are about to do what almost everybody does, which is nothing.
Why men go quiet
Not cruelty. Almost never cruelty.
It is that nobody ever gave you the sentence, and you are fairly sure that anything you write will hurt her more than silence would. So you leave it. The leaving becomes a day, and after a day a message would be odd, and after three it is over anyway.
The other half is that saying no out loud makes you the man who rejected somebody. Most men would rather be vague than be that.
What going quiet actually costs you
Forget her side for a moment, because the argument about karma never convinces anyone.
The cost is a habit. Every time you dodge a small unpleasant sentence you get slightly better at dodging and slightly worse at saying plain things. That is the same muscle you need to ask a woman out on a specific day, to say you would rather not do a third coffee, and to tell somebody you like them.
Men who cannot send two lines ending something are usually the same men who cannot say "I'd like to take you out on Thursday" without four hedges around it. It is one skill with two uses.
There is also the version where silence does not end it. Unanswered messages keep coming. They turn into "did I do something wrong?" and then into something worse, and the thing you avoided for thirty seconds runs for a fortnight in your notifications.
The message
Short, warm, final, and with no reasons in it.
"I've enjoyed talking to you, but I don't think we're a match. Take care."
"Really nice meeting you last night. I didn't feel it romantically, but I'm glad we did it. Good luck out there."
"You're great, and I'm not feeling it the way I'd want to. Wanted to say that rather than go quiet on you."
Three things make those work. They are short, so there is nothing to argue with. They give no reason, so there is nothing to fix. They are final, so she is not left with a door to test.
Send it, then leave the phone alone for an hour. The urge to soften it with a follow up is where men undo the whole thing.
The four ways men make it worse
Giving reasons. "You're lovely but I'm after someone closer to town and I think we want different things." Every clause is a negotiation point, and now she can solve it. Reasons feel more honest. They are just longer.
The compliment sandwich. Two paragraphs of praise wrapped around one sentence of no. She reads the praise, misses the middle, and replies as though the conversation is carrying on.
Offering friendship you do not want. "We should stay friends" costs you nothing to type and hands her an obligation she did not ask for. Do not offer it unless you mean it, and you almost never mean it.
The long apology. "I'm so sorry, I feel terrible about this, I really hope you're not upset." Now she has to console you for rejecting her. It is the most common version and it lands worst.
When you do not need to send anything
Not every match is owed a message.
Two exchanges and nothing arranged: unmatch quietly. There was no arrangement to end, and a formal note about it would be stranger than silence.
She has gone quiet as well: leave it. Two people letting a chat die is a shared decision, not a rejection.
She was aggressive, insulting, or would not accept a no: block and unmatch. The manners in this article are for people who behaved reasonably. You do not owe a closing message to somebody who did not.
The message is for the cases where something real was running. A date happened, plans were being made, or she was invested enough that disappearing would leave her checking her phone for a week.
After a date, send it the next day
The hard one is the morning after an evening that was fine and nothing more than fine.
Send it within a day. Not four days later, once she has worked it out herself and been quietly humiliated by the working out. Not on the spot while she is still on the train home.
Next morning, once, in two lines. She will be disappointed for an afternoon and then get on with her life, which is exactly what a clean no buys her.
If she pushes back
Sometimes the reply asks why, or argues, or tells you it is rude to give no reason.
Answer once, kindly, and add nothing new. "There isn't a reason I could give you that would be any use. It just isn't there for me, and I'm sorry." Then stop. You are not required to defend a preference, and no explanation will make her feel better.
Saying no to the plan is not saying no to her
If you cannot do Thursday, say so and name another day. That is not a rejection and it needs none of the above. What turns a scheduling problem into an ending is being vague. "Maybe next week sometime" is heard as no, and then you are surprised when she stops replying.
Say the actual day, or say the actual no. The middle is where matches die by accident.
When the plain sentence is the hard part everywhere
If ending things is where you freeze, it is usually not the only place you freeze.
The same reluctance turns up when it is time to ask her out, when the texting needs to become a plan, and when you want something on a date and hint at it instead. It is one habit wearing different clothes, and it is far easier to see in a transcript than in your own memory.
An hour with a coach, with your actual conversations open in front of him, tends to find it quickly. Once somebody reads your last four threads back to you and points at the same moment in each one, you stop needing anyone to tell you what to type.
