You are at your desk twenty minutes before you need to leave, and there is a conversation on your phone with a woman you are about to have a drink with. You can remember roughly half of it.
That happens whether you wrote every word yourself in stolen minutes across ten days, or whether our team carried it while you were working. The problem is the same either way. She is about to sit down with a clear idea of what you two have discussed, and you are not sure you have it.
Most men handle this by opening the thread and reading it from the beginning. That is the wrong move, and it is worth saying why before the fix.
Why reading from the top fails
The top of a thread is the least useful part of it. It is the opener, the two flat exchanges after the opener, and a stretch of small talk that neither of you remembers.
So you spend your two minutes on the weakest material, you get about a third of the way in, and you walk out holding the beginning of the conversation and nothing from the end. The end is where the plan lives. The end is also the part she was most recently reading.
Read it backwards instead. It takes about two minutes and it goes in three passes.
Pass one: the last few messages
Start at the bottom and read up until you hit the moment the evening got arranged.
You are looking for four things. What was agreed. What time. Who suggested the place. Whether anything got moved, and why.
That last one matters more than it sounds. If she pushed the night from Tuesday because of work, she knows she did that, and she will probably mention it. A man who does not react to that is a man who did not read his own messages.
Twenty seconds, and it is the most valuable twenty seconds of the whole exercise.
Pass two: the last real thing she said about herself
Now keep scrolling up, past the logistics, until you find the last thing she told you that was not about arranging a drink.
The trip she is about to take. The job she is thinking of leaving. The sister who just moved into her building. It is usually one clear item, and it is usually not far above the plan, because women tend to open up right before they agree to meet.
Hold that one. Then keep going up and find one more like it. Two is enough.
Pass three: anything you said you would do
Skim the thread for your own promises. They are short and they are easy to find, because they almost always start the same way. I will send you that. We should go to the place you mentioned. I know somewhere that does it properly.
If the bar you are walking into got picked for a reason, this is where the reason lives. Turning up somewhere and not knowing why you chose it is the one genuinely awkward version of arriving underprepared.
Thirty seconds. Then ten more on her first name, what she does, and roughly where she lives, which men get wrong more often than anything else on this list.
The three things she expects you to know
Those passes exist to leave you holding three things, and it is worth naming them plainly.
One, the arrangement and any change to it. Two, the couple of things she told you about her own life. Three, whatever you offered to do.
That is the whole list. It is not a transcript and it is not a script, and it will carry you through the first ten minutes, which is the only stretch of a first date that ever feels stiff.
What you can safely skip
Every opener. Any run of messages where the two of you were being funny at each other. The middle third, almost always.
None of that is holding anything she will test you on. Tone is what survived from those messages, and tone is not something you can revise for anyway. Either you are the warm, slightly dry man she has been reading, or you are not, and two more minutes of scrolling will not change which.
Do it before you leave, not at the table
There is one way to make this visible, and it is sitting in the bar scrolling your phone while she walks in.
Read it at your desk, or in the car with the engine off. Then put the phone face down and leave it there. A man who has clearly just checked his notes is worse than a man who forgot something.
If she mentions something you missed
Ask her to say it again. Remind me how that came up. Say that once more, I want to get it right.
Nobody has ever thought less of a man for asking a woman to repeat something she is happy to talk about. What does damage is nodding along to something you did not follow and then getting it wrong later in the evening.
Where this fits
If this problem shows up often, it is usually a sign of something good rather than something bad. It means there are conversations running that you are not personally sitting inside all day.
That is what the Online Dating Concierge is for. Our team redoes your dating photos and your whole profile, then runs your apps and your conversations until dates are on your calendar, and the reading you do beforehand takes about two minutes. Your first date within a week, or we keep working.
If the only thing making you hesitate is walking in half briefed, see if you qualify and ask exactly what you get handed before a date, or read what the Online Dating Concierge covers first.
