There is no fixed number of dates, and anyone who gives you one is guessing, whether the matches and messages came from a dating app or you met her in person. As a general rule, a handful of dates is too early for most women, and several months of dating with nothing said is too late. The better question is not how long, but whether the signs are there. You see each other often. You know each other in more than one setting. Both of you are already acting like it is exclusive.
The short answer
If you have met in person a number of times over a few weeks, and she has shown steady interest, you are close. When it feels like you are already a couple in everything but the word, say the word.
Asking tends to go well when the answer is already obvious to both of you. The question is a way of making it official, and it is not a way of finding out whether she likes you.
Signs it is time
- You see each other regularly, and you do not have to chase her to make plans.
- She texts you first as often as you text her.
- You have been out in more than one kind of setting, not only drinks. Dinner, a walk, a day with her friends, an ordinary afternoon.
- She talks about next week or next month with you in it.
- She has introduced you to people in her life, or mentioned that she wants to.
- Neither of you is seeing anyone else, and it has started to feel strange to pretend otherwise.
Three or four of these together is a good sign. All of them is a very good one.
Signs it is too early
- You have been on two or three dates and you are still learning her last name.
- You have mostly seen her late at night, or only when you invited her.
- She has not said a word about the future.
- You are asking because you are anxious, not because things feel settled.
Moving too fast looks like pressure to a woman, even when you mean it kindly. If she says yes to be polite, you have a girlfriend in name and a lot of doubt underneath.
Why waiting too long costs you
Some men wait for a perfect moment, and the weeks pass. During that time she does not know where she stands, and she may stop investing.
If you have been dating for a good while, seeing each other regularly, and you have never talked about what you are, she is probably wondering. A woman who likes you and hears nothing may decide you are not serious. So the other way to get it wrong is to treat the question as something that must be earned by waiting longer.
Do not use the question to fix doubt
A common trap is asking because you are insecure. You feel her pulling back a little, so you decide that making it official will secure her. It rarely works.
a dating coach is blunt about this in other parts of his teaching: neediness is one of the least attractive things a man can bring. Coming from scarcity, where you need one woman to make your life okay, pushes women away. A man who has a full life and other things going on asks from a steady place. He wants her, and he does not need the answer to feel okay about himself.
If you feel anxious, the fix is to work on the anxious part, not to rush the conversation.
How to bring it up
Keep it short and calm. You do not need a speech, a gift or a script. Something like: "I really like where this is going, and I do not want to see anyone else. Do you feel the same?" Say it in person, in a relaxed moment, and say it once.
Then let her answer. If she says yes, great. If she hesitates, do not argue with her.
If she says not yet
A "not yet" is not a no. She may want more time, or she may be coming out of something. Ask what would help her feel ready, then decide whether you can live with that pace.
Give it a fair window, perhaps a few weeks, and watch her actions. If she keeps showing up and the warmth is real, a "not yet" often turns into a yes. If she stays vague and nothing changes, you have learned what you needed to. Stay honest with her, and keep your own standards. You are allowed to walk away from a situation that has no clear future.
