Bumble's help pages give no countdown after which a message in a live chat is erased. Messages stay in the chat until the chat ends, and a chat ends when one of you unmatches, when an account is deleted or blocked, or when a match expires before anyone writes. After that, who can still see the words depends on which of those happened.

You cannot delete a single message

Bumble says a message cannot be deleted individually once it is sent. There is no unsend and no edit.

So the first rule of Bumble messaging is that whatever you type is final. A line you would not say to her face is a line to rewrite before you tap send.

What unmatching removes

If you unmatch someone, the whole chat is removed from your view. It does not leave hers. Bumble's page on your conversations says the other person still has their copy of the messages.

Men sometimes unmatch to hide something they wish they had said. It does not work, because she keeps every word and can show it to anyone she likes. Unmatching ends the contact. It does not take anything back.

When her account is gone

If a match deletes her Bumble account, or Bumble blocks her for breaking its guidelines, her profile and the chat history disappear from your matches. That is why a woman you were talking to can vanish from your list overnight.

It tells you nothing about you. A missing match could also have expired after 72 hours with no message, or she may have unmatched you. Nothing in a vanished chat says you did something wrong.

What happens when you delete yours

After you delete your own account, you have 28 days to ask Bumble to reactivate it. After 28 days it is not recoverable, because Bumble says the erasure process has already started.

You can skip that wait by sending a Data Erasure Request, which can take up to 30 days to complete. Bumble also says it keeps some data for legal or regulatory reasons, and that it holds on to basic account details to enforce a block when a profile was blocked.

How to get a copy of a conversation

You can request a record of what was said, but it is slower than a screenshot. You submit a Subject Access Request through chat support. Bumble says it aims to provide data within one calendar month.

One catch is that you only receive your side. Both you and your match have to submit separate requests to get each half of a chat, so a copy of the full conversation is not something one person can ask for alone.

What this means for what you send

Write as if she will keep it, because she will. That is a better rule than any trick for making a chat disappear, and it makes your messages better.

a dating coach's message advice is built the same way. Keep the first messages short, specific to something on her page, and ending on something easy to answer. A line or two with a clear reason for sending it is a line you can stand behind, and a long, anxious paragraph is the one you will wish you could pull back.

If a chat has gone wrong and you are tempted to unmatch to tidy up, do not rely on it to erase what happened. Spend that energy on the next conversation and on moving the good ones toward a date.

When the real worry is her screenshot

Most men who ask how long Bumble keeps messages are really asking whether something they sent can come back. The honest answer is that it can, from her phone, for as long as she keeps it.

That is no reason to be guarded with women you like. It is a reason to be someone whose messages hold up when read aloud.
