eHarmony matches people from the answers they give in the Compatibility Quiz. The answers build a Personality Profile. eHarmony says it starts matching you right after you finish the quiz, drawing from its pool of singles it feels fit your criteria. Each member it shows you carries a Compatibility Score. You Like a profile, and if she Likes you back, it is a Match.
Step one: the quiz and the Personality Profile
Everyone who joins starts with the Compatibility Quiz. There is no skipping it for a faster route in. The answers become your Personality Profile, and that profile is the input for everything that follows.
The practical point for a man is that the quiz is the one place where your answers do the matching for you. You can improve photos later. You cannot easily fix a quiz you filled out while half distracted. Answer it rested, and answer as you are.
Step two: the pool and your preferences
Members who meet your search preferences appear in your Discover list. eHarmony says the list is updated regularly and that new members join every day.
Because new members join every day, a thin list this week is not the final word. Check back, and do not judge the whole site on one evening.
Two filters work together here. The quiz decides who fits you on personality. Your preferences decide who fits you on the basics. A very narrow set of preferences shrinks the list fast, so if it looks thin, loosen one thing before you blame the matching.
Step three: the Compatibility Score
For each member eHarmony shows a Compatibility Score based on the quiz results. It runs on a scale from 60 to 140. A score near 100 is a good average, and 110 or more means a high level of compatibility.
Inside each member's profile, a Compatibility section shows which traits you share and which may cause friction. Read it. It tells you what to ask about. If it says you differ on how much time to spend with friends, that is a good topic for a first call, and a good thing to know before dinner.
Read the friction items as questions, not warnings. If the page says you differ on how much time to spend with friends, ask her what a good weekend looks like. Her answer tells you more than the trait label does, and it gives you a natural reason to suggest meeting.
Use the score to sort, not to rule people out. A woman at 105 whose photos and answers you like is worth writing to just as much as one at 125. The number measures how your answers line up on paper, and it says nothing about whether you will enjoy her company.
Step four: Like, Match and talk
To connect, you hit Like on a profile and can add a message. If she Likes you back, it is a Match. With Premium you can then swap messages.
That mutual step means the Like is your real choice. a dating coach's advice on any app applies: be selective about whom you like. Liking everyone fills your own list with conversations you do not want. Pick women whose pages gave you something specific to say.
If you add a message to your Like, make it count. One concrete line about something on her page beats a general compliment every time.
The completeness rule
eHarmony's app listing says every profile must be at least half complete, to focus on serious intentions. That cuts both ways. The women you see have put in some effort, and so must you.
A half-empty page costs you the same attention it costs anyone else. Fill in the sections, add several photos, and write answers with real detail. A man who finishes his profile properly already stands out in a pool where many people stop at the minimum.
What a man controls
You cannot see the formula, and you should not try to guess it. Four things sit in your hands.
Your quiz answers, which should describe you honestly. Your preferences, which should be wide enough to give you a real list. Your photos, which decide whether she opens your page. And your first line, which decides whether she replies.
The first two shape who eHarmony shows you. The last two decide what happens once they see you.
Where the matching stops
The matching delivers introductions. It does not deliver dates. A man with a strong Compatibility Score list and no plan to meet anyone is in the same place as a man with a weak list.
After a few exchanges, suggest a day and a place. Women on a site built around serious relationships tend to appreciate a clear invitation. Track how many Likes become Matches, how many Matches reply, and how many replies become a date, and fix the weakest step first.
