Compliment something she did or chose, not her face. A woman who is often called pretty has heard "you are beautiful" more times than she can count, and it gets her a polite thank-you. Notice one specific thing about how she acts, say it once in a calm voice, and follow it with a question.
If you are nervous about approaching a woman who is very attractive, that is normal. The fix is to treat her like any woman you are curious about.
Why the looks line is the weakest one
A looks compliment is one she has heard many times, often from men she did not want to hear it from. It tells her nothing about you, and it gives her a single move: smile politely and leave.
A specific line about what she did is rare. It proves you were paying attention to her, not just her appearance, and it gives her something to talk about.
What to compliment instead
You can only compliment what you have seen, so look for something real:
- How she laughs at herself.
- The way she explained something to her friend.
- A choice she made, like the book she picked or the way she ordered.
- Her energy, her humor or the effort she put into something.
A women's site once asked its own staff for the best compliments they ever got. Most were about character and effort. Women named humor, energy, hard work, thoughtfulness, staying calm in a crisis and creativity. Almost none were about appearance.
What to say when you approach her
Name one specific thing, say what you noticed about it, then ask a question.
- "You came in like you already had a plan. Do you always know what you want?"
- "You were the only one who laughed at that. What was funny about it?"
- "You explain that so clearly. How long have you been doing it?"
The compliment takes one sentence. The question hands her the conversation, so you are not standing there waiting for a reaction.
What if you want to mention her looks
You can, but keep it small and specific, and do not make it the whole opener. "That jacket is great, where did you find it?" works because the second half is a real question. "You are gorgeous" ends in silence.
If you mention appearance at all, follow it right away with something about her.
Controlling your nerves before you approach
When a woman looks very good to you, your voice speeds up and rises, and your sentences get longer. Work against that on purpose:
- Breathe out before you speak.
- Slow your pace.
- Say one short sentence instead of three.
- Hold eye contact for a second, then glance away naturally.
Calm sounds confident, and confident sounds sincere. A compliment spoken quickly sounds like a line.
What not to do
- Do not stare before you speak. Walk up, say hello and then compliment.
- Do not explain why you are nervous at length.
- Do not stack three compliments in a row.
- Do not say something you do not mean.
- Do not press on after a clear no.
If she responds coolly, say "Nice to meet you" and walk on. You said something kind and walked away gracefully, which is a good outcome.
Keep going after the compliment
After the question, listen. Pull one detail from her answer, respond to it, and add a thought of your own. If she asks you questions back, laughs and stays, she is engaged. If her answers get short and she turns away, wrap up warmly.
The compliment is a way in. The conversation is what she remembers.
Practicing with a coach
The distance between knowing this and doing it with a woman who makes you nervous is large. It closes with repetition and feedback.
The Cold Approach Bootcamp is the only in-person program we run. A coach stands beside you while you talk to women in the field, in Miami or New York, so you practice this exact moment live and hear what to adjust right after. Group is three consecutive days at three students per coach, and Private is fully 1-on-1 for one, two or three days. Approach anxiety is the specialty, and a total beginner is welcome.
With enough practice, a pretty woman is just a woman you are curious about.
