Bumble keeps this setting under More about you, on the screen where you edit your details. Scroll down to More about you, tap Looking for, select the options that best describe your dating intentions, and tap Save. Bumble says you can update your dating intentions at any time, so the choice is never locked in.

The steps

  1. Open your profile and tap Edit profile.
  2. Scroll down to More about you.
  3. Tap Looking for.
  4. Select the options that best describe your dating intentions. Bumble limits how many you can pick, so choose the ones that fit best.
  5. Tap Save.

The last step is the one to remember. Tap Save before you leave the screen so the change actually takes.

Picking the right options

Choose what is true about what you want right now, not what you think will get the most interest.

If you want a relationship, say so. If you are open and seeing where things go, pick the option that says that. A man who is honest here saves himself weeks of conversations with women who want something different.

Because Bumble caps the number of options, you cannot tick everything to keep every door open. Treat that as useful. It forces you to decide what you are actually after, which is worth knowing before a first date.

Why honest beats broad

Some men pick the most serious option because they think it makes them look like a better catch. Others pick the loosest one to avoid scaring anyone off. Both tend to go wrong.

The woman reading it takes your answer at face value. If your choice says one thing and your behavior says another, she notices the gap sooner or later. When she does, it stops being a small mismatch and starts looking like dishonesty.

An honest choice also makes the conversation easier. She already knows roughly what you want, so neither of you has to dance around it.

When your plans change

People's intentions shift. You come out of a long relationship and want something light for a while. Or you have been casual for a year and realize you want something serious.

Bumble says you can update your dating intentions at any time, so update it when your answer changes. It takes a minute, and it keeps what women read about you in line with what you actually want. An out-of-date answer is the same as a wrong one.

When it comes up in your messages

Plenty of women will ask directly: "So what are you looking for on here?" How you answer matters more than the option you picked.

Keep it short, relaxed and true. "Honestly, something real if I meet the right person, but I'm not in a rush" is a good answer if it is yours. So is "Seeing where things go. I like meeting people and I'll know it when it clicks." What you want to avoid is a long speech, a defensive tone, or turning the question into a negotiation.

Then hand the question back lightly. "What about you?" keeps it a conversation rather than an interview. If your answers line up, that is a good moment to suggest a specific day and place to continue it in person.

What the setting cannot do for you

The Looking for option tells a woman what you want. It does not make her want it with you.

What does that is the rest of your page and the way you talk to her. Clear, recent photos that show a life she can picture. A line or two about you that is specific enough to ask about. Conversations that are light and fun, and that move toward a date once she is clearly enjoying them. Get those right and the right women will see your intentions as a bonus, not the reason they said yes.

The short answer

Tap Edit profile, scroll to More about you, tap Looking for, choose the options that best fit what you want, and tap Save. You can change it any time your plans change. Pick honestly, and when she asks you directly, give a short, relaxed, true answer and ask her the same.
