At the start you get asked what you are looking for, and you answer honestly. Somewhere between twenty six and thirty four. Fit. Someone with a proper job. Not a big drinker. You have thought about this before, so the answer comes out fast.

Then you go on six dates in three weeks, which is more than you have been on in two years, and you find out that most of that list was a guess.

Section 01

The list you wrote was written by a man who was not dating

That is not a criticism. It is just what a preference is, before you have any recent evidence.

The list came from swiping, and swiping teaches you what you like the look of. It cannot teach you who you have a good Thursday with. Those turn out to be different questions, and the second one only gets answered in a bar, with a real woman, about forty minutes in.

So you go out, and the answers start arriving. The one whose job you thought sounded boring is the one you texted the next morning. The one who looked exactly right in her photos spent the evening on her phone. The age bracket you were confident about produced the two best conversations at the top end of it and nothing at the bottom.

None of that was available to you before. All of it is available now.

Section 02

What real dates teach that swiping cannot

Three things, usually.

The dealbreaker that was not one. A man rules out women with children, or women who live across town, or women who are older than him, and then meets one and cannot remember why the rule existed.

The thing that was never on the list and turns out to matter most. Almost always it is a manner rather than a fact. She asks questions back. She is up for going somewhere after. She can be teased. You cannot put any of that in a filter, and after six dates you know it is what you were actually sorting for.

And the type you kept picking that does not work. This is the uncomfortable one. Sometimes a man has been swiping on the same woman for years, meeting her, and having the same disappointing evening, and it takes seeing it three times in a month to notice the pattern.

Section 03

Nobody expects you to be right at the start

This is the part worth saying clearly, because men stay quiet out of politeness.

You gave instructions. The instructions produced dates. The dates produced information. Changing the instructions is not you being difficult or wasting anyone's work, it is the entire reason the dates were worth going on. The profile, the targeting and the day to day operation get adjusted around what is actually producing results, and what you learned on Thursday is a result.

Men sit on this for weeks. They go on dates with women they have stopped wanting to meet because they feel bad saying the list has moved. That is a month of evenings spent being polite to a spreadsheet.

Section 04

Say it specifically

Vague feedback changes nothing. "I want someone more interesting" is not an instruction anyone can act on.

Name a real woman from a real date and say which part. That worked, more of her. That did not, and here is the specific reason. The reason matters more than the verdict, because "she was quiet" and "she did not want to be there" look identical in a summary and mean completely different things.

The useful version sounds like this. The one on Tuesday was the best of the six, and it was because she argued with me about something. The one on Saturday looked exactly like what I said I wanted and we had nothing to say after the first drink. So push toward women who will push back, and stop optimising for the photos.

That is actionable in an afternoon. Everything downstream moves with it: which women get swiped on, which conversations get the attention, which of your photos leads, and what the profile says about you, because the profile is what sorts the women before anyone speaks to anyone.

Section 05

The two ways this goes wrong

Changing everything after one bad date. One evening is not data. If you rewrite the whole thing every Sunday, nothing runs long enough to tell you whether it works.

And the opposite, which is more common. Sitting on it for a month because the original list is written down somewhere and feels binding. It is not binding. It was your best guess with no dates behind it, and it stopped being the best available answer the moment you had six.

Section 06

What you were actually buying

The dates are the obvious product. The thing that surprises men is that the dates teach them what they want, and then everything moves to match.

Our team redoes your photos and your whole profile, runs your apps, talks to the women who fit what you are looking for, and keeps adjusting all of it as what you are looking for turns out to be something slightly different from what you said in the first week. Once it is running properly you are looking at 2-3 dates each week, which is enough evenings with real women that the guessing ends fairly quickly.

You are allowed to change your mind. It would be strange if six dates in three weeks did not change it.
