A good eHarmony profile answers each question in two or three sentences, names real places and real habits, and sounds like one man. Below are sample answers with the reason each one works. Copy the shape, not the words. A profile built from someone else's lines tells her nothing about you.

What the examples have in common

Every strong answer does the same three things. It gives a scene she can picture, it hands her an easy question to ask back, and it stays positive.

eHarmony itself says many members pass over profiles that look empty or half finished, and it suggests two or three sentences per question. That is the floor. a dating coach's test goes one step further: general statements fade into the background, while a specific scene sticks.

Example: what you do for fun

"Saturday mornings I walk to the farmers market and buy whatever looks best, then cook it badly for friends on Sunday. I am slowly getting better at risotto."

This works because it has a day, a place and a small, honest flaw. She can picture the market. She can ask what you cooked last week. And "cook it badly" shows you do not take yourself too seriously, which a line about being "easygoing" never could.

Example: your work

"I am a physical therapist. Most days I help people get back to something they love doing, like running or gardening, which is a good reason to get out of bed."

This works because it says what you do in plain words, then says what it is for. It also tells her you care about people, without announcing it. Compare "I work in healthcare and love my job", which could describe thousands of men.

If your job is hard to explain, give her one concrete detail from a normal day. "I schedule trucks for a grocery chain, so I am the reason your shelves are full on Friday" is better than any job title.

Example: what you want

"I am looking for someone I can be silly with and also have a serious conversation with at eleven at night. A good partner, to me, is someone who is up for a Tuesday plan as much as a big trip."

This works because it is clear about the goal and warm in tone. Notice what it leaves out. No list of things you refuse to put up with, no line about drama, and nothing about your last relationship. My short list of things to keep out of your writing is anything negative, needy, strange or deal-breaking.

Example: a place you want to go

"I am saving up for two weeks in Portugal, mostly to eat my way down the coast. I would like to go with someone who will happily get lost with me."

A plan beats a wish. "I love to travel" fits everyone and says nothing. A named place, a reason and the kind of company you want gives her a picture of the life she would be joining.

Example: something people would not guess

"I play the cello badly in a community orchestra. We have performed exactly once, and it was the best afternoon of my year."

Small, real and a little funny. It also shows you can commit to a hobby and enjoy it without being good at it.

What to avoid copying

Do not lift these answers. Two things go wrong when you do.

First, she may have read the same sample elsewhere, and a man who sounds like everyone else disappears. Second, you cannot answer follow-up questions about a life you did not live. She asks about the farmers market, and you have never been.

Use the examples to learn the shape. Then ask yourself the same questions and write down true answers: what you did last weekend, what you cooked, where you walked, what made you laugh. Your own week is better material than any sample.

A quick check before you save it

Read each answer out loud and ask three questions. Could another man have written this? Does it give her something easy to ask about? Is anything in it negative, needy or boastful?

If the first answer is yes, add a specific detail. If the second is no, add a scene. If the third is yes, cut the line.

When your own words will not come

Plenty of men know what they want to say and cannot get it onto the page. If you are stuck, a coach can take your answers, tighten them and show you what is working. The aim is a profile that sounds like you on a good day and gives a woman a real reason to write.
