Yes, it can. Online dating puts you in front of single women you would never run into by chance, and a man over 50 has real strengths to show them. It works best when you treat it as one part of a plan: recent pictures, a plain statement of what you want, and short messages that lead to a coffee.
What gets harder at 50
a dating coach made a whole video about dating after 30, and his main point carries straight into your fifties. Dating itself does not change much. Who you bump into changes a great deal.
When you were in school or in your twenties, eligible women were everywhere. Now most of your friends are married, you go out less, and the people you work with are not mostly young or single. You have to go looking for the women you want to meet, when it used to happen on its own.
So the problem is not that you got worse at this. The supply dried up around you.
Why the apps help
An app fixes the supply problem directly. It shows you single women who live near you, without making you rebuild a social life first.
coach calls an online profile passive income: it takes little time to set up and keeps working in the background. He is just as clear that it should not be your whole strategy. Add something that gets you out of the house, such as a club, a league, a class or an evening out with single friends, in places where the women you want to meet already spend time.
What you have going for you
My claim is that you gained value as you aged. You have more life experience, more to talk about and, if you have been paying attention, more understanding of women.
The work is to let her see it. He describes two kinds of older man. One is worldly, interesting and has his life together. The other has simply gotten older. Your pictures and your first lines should make the first kind obvious.
Show how you look now
The most common problem is a lead picture from ten years ago. Use a clear, recent shot of your face, in daylight, with nobody else in the frame. It matters more after 50 than at any other age. A woman who meets a man who does not look like his picture starts the date annoyed.
My advice on presentation is practical. Do not wear clothes ten years out of date, and do not dress like a teenager either. Aim for elegant and appropriate for a successful, sophisticated man. Get in shape, because looking younger than your age beats looking older than it.
Then show a life. A hobby, a trip, friends, a kitchen you actually cook in. Use different days and different outfits.
Say what you want, plainly
A man over 50 usually knows what he is after, and that is a strength on an app. Say it in two or three plain lines and add one specific detail she could ask about.
My rule at any age is that the app attracts what the page says. A page written like a man looking for a hookup gets hookups, and a page that says you want something lasting gets that. Choose which you mean before you write a word.
coach also tells older men to name their dating goal. If you cannot say whether you want to play the field or settle down, you tend to end up with neither. And do not grab the first woman who shows interest. Needy is unattractive at any age, so look for the right person, not just a person.
The age gap question
If you are 55, you probably still find women a good deal younger attractive, which means an age gap is likely and the question will come up.
My advice is to let her get to know you before age becomes a factor. Do not bring it up yourself. Aim for a calm, less eager style in the early messages, so she sees a man she likes first and does the arithmetic second.
Frame it as worldly, not apologetic. If you sound insecure about being too old for her, she will hear it.
Messages that lead to a plan
Keep the first message short and specific. Pick one detail from her page and ask a question she can answer in a line. Skip the paragraph about yourself.
Answer while the conversation is warm, and do not overwrite. coach gets a woman from the app to her number in four to seven messages, and every message has a job. Mention plans before you close, so the invitation does not arrive out of nowhere. A man with some years behind him usually does this well, because he is comfortable with a plain invitation.
How to tell whether it is working
Do not judge it after one week. coach compares online dating to building an asset or a business: the returns come slowly, and the men who fail mostly quit too early.
Count what happens over a few weeks, from matches to conversations to plans to dates. Few matches means work on the pictures. Matches but no replies means work on the first message. Replies but no dates means suggest a plan sooner. Fix the weakest step first, change one thing at a time, and test two apps instead of six.
