Yes, but they are not free. OkCupid sells Read Receipts separately, in packs, and you apply one to a conversation you choose so you can see when your last message there was read. Premium Plus includes unlimited read receipts. They only work with a mutual match, and your matches are not told when you use them.

How OkCupid read receipts work

A read receipt on OkCupid is something you add to one conversation, not a switch that runs across the whole app.

You pick the conversation, apply a Read Receipt to it, and then you can see when your last message in that conversation was read. If you buy them in packs, each one you use comes out of the pack. If you are on Premium Plus, you do not need to count them, because they are included without limit.

Two limits apply. You can only use them with a mutual match, meaning a woman who Liked you back. And they tell you about your last message, not about everything that came before it.

She is not told

OkCupid does not tell your match that you put a read receipt on the conversation. From her side, nothing changes.

That cuts both ways. Any woman can buy them too, so a woman you are talking to could be seeing when you read her messages without you knowing. Assume your reading habits are not always private, and do not let that bother you either.

What a read receipt can tell you

It tells you one fact: she opened your last message, and when.

That is all. It does not tell you what she thought of it, whether she means to answer, or why she has not yet. A read message with no reply could mean she was on the train, she was busy, she liked it and was saving the answer for later, or she was not interested. The receipt cannot tell those apart.

So the information feels large and is actually small.

Why knowing mostly hurts

dating advice makes a point about read receipts in texting that applies here too. Seeing that a woman read your message and did not reply mostly causes suffering. It does nothing useful for you except make you upset.

Think about how it plays out. You send a good message in the afternoon. At night, the receipt says she read it at seven. Nothing has come back. Now you spend the evening building theories about one timestamp, and your next message, if you send one, comes out a little more anxious than it should.

Without the receipt, you would have done the sensible thing anyway: got on with your evening and checked again tomorrow.

dating advice also points out what you gain when nobody is watching the clock. You can open a message, read it properly and take a minute to think before you answer. On OkCupid that is already true for you, because your matches are not told when you read theirs. Enjoy that. Answer when you have something good to say, not the second the notification lands.

When one is worth using

There are a few cases where a receipt is useful rather than just stressful.

  • A conversation where you have already suggested a plan, like a drink on Thursday, and you need to know whether she has seen it before you book anything.
  • A match that has gone quiet for days, where you want to know whether she simply has not opened the app before you decide to send a follow-up.
  • Your own curiosity, once, to see whether knowing changes anything for you. For most men, it does not.

Outside those, save the money. The effort is better spent on the messages themselves.

After she has read it and gone quiet

If a receipt shows she read your message and has not answered, do not treat it as a verdict.

Give it a few days. Then send one light follow-up that stands on its own, such as a callback to something she said or a simple, specific suggestion to meet. Not "?" and not "did you see my message". If that single follow-up gets nothing, let her go and put your attention on the conversations that are moving.

Never stack messages. Three unanswered lines in a row read as pressure, whatever they say.

Put the effort into getting the date

Read receipts feel important when too much of the connection lives inside the app. Every silence feels loaded because the chat is all there is.

Shorten that stage. a dating coach's approach is to get from the first message to her number in about four to seven messages. He brings up the idea of a drink early, as a light suggestion, so asking for her number a few messages later feels natural. Something as simple as "You'd get on with my favorite wine bar. Drinks this week?" does the job once the chat has a little life in it. Once you have a plan and a number, you will not care much when she opened a message. You will be busy deciding where to take her.
