Section 01

Give a clear answer first

Answer the question in one short sentence. Don’t make her pull the answer out of you.

If you’re single, say:

“No, I’m single.”

Then keep the conversation moving.

“What made you ask?”

That answer is calm and direct. You don’t sound hurt, excited, or worried about what she thinks.

If you’re dating women but don’t have a girlfriend, say:

“No, I’m not in a relationship.”

That’s better than saying, “It’s complicated,” when it isn’t. “It’s complicated” makes her picture a woman calling you during dinner and asking why you haven’t made things official.

If you have a girlfriend, say so.

“Yes, I do.”

Don’t hide her. Don’t act proud that you might get away with it. A woman asking you this may be deciding if she wants to keep talking to you. Your answer tells her what kind of man you are.

Section 02

Don’t turn your answer into a speech

Many men answer a simple question with a long defense.

She asks:

“Do you have a girlfriend?”

He says:

“No, but I’ve been focused on work. I had a bad breakup before that. I’m not really looking for anything serious, but I’m open to meeting someone if it happens.”

Now she has to sort through five points to find the answer. You also sound like you’re trying to prove something.

Say the answer and stop talking for a moment.

“No, I’m single.”

Let her respond. If she asks why, answer that question then.

“I haven’t met the right woman yet.”

That’s enough. You don’t need to list every woman who rejected you. You don’t need to explain how busy your job is. You don’t need to say you’re waiting for a woman who is “different from the rest.”

Short answers carry more weight when they are true.

Section 03

Use her question to start a real conversation

When a woman asks if you have a girlfriend, she may be curious about you. She may also be telling you that she’s checking your availability.

You can answer and ask what started the question.

“No, I’m single. What made you ask?”

If she says, “You seem like you would have one,” don’t argue with her.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Then ask her something about herself.

“Are you seeing anyone?”

That question is fair. You answered hers, and now you want the same information.

If she says, “No, I’m single too,” you can keep the mood light:

“So we’ve both made it through the first question.”

Then move on to a topic that gives you more to work with.

“What do you usually do when you’re not working?”

The point isn’t to make the girlfriend question last ten minutes. It’s to answer without fear, then learn who she is.

Section 04

What to say when she asks in a group

A woman may ask you this in front of other people. You may notice two women looking at you after she asks. You may also hear a friend say, “He doesn’t have one.”

Don’t look around the room for help. Don’t laugh and say, “Why, are you interested?” That can sound like you need her to prove she likes you.

Look at the woman who asked and answer her.

“No, I’m single.”

If you want to tease her, keep it light and easy to understand.

“That was a direct question.”

Then smile and continue talking.

If she asks because someone told her a story about you, don’t rush to defend yourself.

“No, I don’t have a girlfriend. What did you hear?”

Now she has to explain what she means. You stay calm, and you get useful information.

If the story is false, correct it with one clean sentence.

“That’s not true. I went to dinner with her once, but we’re not together.”

Don’t insult the person who told the story. Don’t give a ten-minute account of the dinner. A clear fact works better than a heated defense.

Section 05

Don’t use these weak answers

Some answers make you look unsure before you’ve even started dating her.

Avoid:

“Why do you care?”

That sounds annoyed.

Avoid:

“Would it matter if I did?”

That sounds like you’re hiding something.

Avoid:

“I have options.”

That makes you sound like you’re trying to impress her with women who aren’t there.

Avoid:

“I’m married to my work.”

That’s a joke people use when they don’t want to answer. It also tells her nothing.

Avoid:

“No woman can handle me.”

That line puts a problem in her head before she knows you.

If you’re single, say you’re single. If you’re in a relationship, say you’re in one. Your answer should match your life outside the conversation.

Section 06

If she asks after you flirt with her

Sometimes she asks because you made your interest clear.

You tell her she looks good. You ask her to get coffee. You stand close while you talk. Then she asks:

“Do you have a girlfriend?”

Answer without stepping back from your interest.

“No, I’m single. I asked because I like talking to you.”

That line gives her the fact and the reason. It’s honest without begging for approval.

If she says, “I thought you had one,” you can say:

“What gave you that idea?”

If she says you seem confident, accept it.

“Maybe I’ve had enough practice talking to women.”

Then bring the focus back to her.

“Are you free for coffee this week?”

You don’t need a clever line. You need a clean answer and the courage to stay in the conversation.
