Not in the app, as far as Tinder's pages describe. On Android and iOS, creating an account starts with entering and verifying your mobile number. The website lets you choose a sign-in method. It asks you to verify a number or an email only if that is required. You can also connect an Apple or Google account for an easier login.
How sign-up works in the app
On the Tinder app for Android or iOS, you create an account by entering your phone number and verifying it. You may be asked to enter and verify your email too.
Tinder's account steps also mention connecting an Apple or Google account for a streamlined login. That is a way to sign in, and the pages do not say it replaces the number.
How it works on the website
On Tinder.com you pick a sign-in method. You are prompted to verify your phone number, your email address, or both if required.
So the website is where the choice sits. What it asks for depends on the method you pick and on what Tinder requires of you at that moment. The practical test is to try the sign-up and read what it asks.
Why Tinder wants a number
A verified number ties the account to a person who can receive a text. Tinder requires SMS verification when you log in with your phone number, and recommends never sharing the code with anyone.
Take that last line seriously. A common trick is a stranger who asks you to read a code back to him, saying it was sent to you by mistake. A code that arrives on your phone is for you alone.
One number, one account
Tinder says a phone number or email address can only be verified on one Tinder account at a time.
So you cannot use one number for two accounts. If you already have an account on a number and want to make another, the second one will have to use something different. I will not walk you through ways to get around the verification. Tinder treats the number as part of the account, and a workaround is a good way to lose the account.
If your number is the problem
Men who ask this usually have a real reason. They changed their number, lost the phone, or do not want to give Tinder their main one.
If you changed numbers, update it in the app. Go to the profile icon, then Settings, then Account Settings. Tap Phone Number, then Update My Phone Number, and follow the SMS verification steps. You can also add and verify a new phone number or email directly in your account settings.
If you do not want to give your main number out of privacy concern, the safest route is a second number from a normal carrier. It is yours, it stays active, and it can receive a code when you log in. A number you cannot receive texts on will lock you out later.
Does verifying slow you down
Not much. It is a one-time step, and an account that is set up right on day one is easier to keep. The time that matters is what comes next: your lead photo, your first line, and how soon you ask a woman to meet.
a dating coach's equation for online dating starts with time and matches per time. A man who spends his first evening hunting for ways around a text message has spent it on the one step that does not produce a match.
Tinder has a help page for when you cannot verify your email or phone number, so start there. Before you do, check the boring things: the number is typed correctly with the right country code, the phone has a signal, and the text has not landed in a filtered folder. Those cover the usual causes.
The short answer
In the app, Tinder starts with a phone number. On the website you pick a sign-in method and verify what is required, and Apple or Google can be connected. Keep one number per account, never share your code, and change the number in settings if it is the number that has to change.
