Bumble is the closest to Tinder, because a mutual right swipe is a match there too. If you want something different, Hinge starts a match from a Like on one specific part of her page, and Coffee Meets Bagel hands you a small daily batch. If you want to look for women yourself, Match, OkCupid and eHarmony let you search and filter. No app wins for every man, so choose by how you want your matches to start.

Why men leave Tinder in the first place

Most men who ask this question are tired of one of three things. The stack never ends. The matches do not answer. Or the app feels like it is for hookups when they want something more.

a dating coach says Tinder has more of a hookup reputation than Hinge or Bumble, though relationships start there too. He also says that in major US cities Tinder has a lot of fake profiles, which is one reason he finds Hinge tends to do better there. In many places in Europe, though, Tinder is almost the only app people use.

So before you switch, ask which of the three is your actual problem. A new app will not fix a profile that nobody replies to.

Bumble

Bumble is the safest switch. Its People tab shows profiles that fit your filters, you swipe right to show interest, and a mutual right swipe is a match. After that, each of you gets one opening message to send before a time limit runs out.

Bumble says it wants members to find meaningful and authentic relationships. That makes it a good second app for a man whose Tinder results are fine but whose conversations feel casual.

Hinge

Hinge is built differently. You read a woman's prompt answers and personal details, then send a Like or a Rose on one photo or prompt, with a comment if you want. It calls itself the dating app designed to be deleted.

Our view is that Hinge suits a man with a few specific, interesting things on his page. He has handed her something to point at. A man with one decent picture and nothing written has not.

Coffee Meets Bagel

Instead of a stack, Coffee Meets Bagel sends a personalized batch of people called Bagels around noon each day. The picks come from your preferences, your past Likes and passes, and how likely each woman is to like you back. If she already liked you, your Like is an instant match.

It suits a man who loses hours to scrolling and would rather make a few real decisions a day. It does not suit a man who wants volume.

Match

Match shows Recommended profiles and Top Picks drawn from your preferences and activity, such as faith, smoking, drinking, education and whether someone has or wants kids. You tap the heart to Like or the X to move on. Its higher tiers add search, so you can look for women yourself.

That fits a man who knows his priorities and wants to filter, rather than have an app decide the order.

OkCupid

OkCupid filters by basics, then compares your answers to its match questions with hers and shows a Match %. a dating coach rates its matching as good and finds the women there smart and interesting.

It rewards a man who writes honestly. If you answer the way you think women want, the number pairs you with women who suit a man you are not.

eHarmony

eHarmony describes itself as a site for people who know they want a meaningful relationship. Members take a Compatibility Quiz and see a Compatibility Score with each other member. It is the biggest step away from swiping.

How a match startsPick it when
BumbleA mutual right swipe, then one opening message eachYou want the same swipe, with a time limit on the first message
HingeA Like or Rose on one photo or promptYou are happy to read before you choose
Coffee Meets BagelA Like on someone from your daily batchYou want fewer decisions
MatchA Like on a Recommended profile or Top PickYou want to filter and search
OkCupidAnswers compared, shown as a Match %You want to see how you fit
eHarmonyA choice from a scored list after a quizYou know you want something serious

How to test them

a dating coach says to test several apps, because each has its own algorithm and its own users, and some men fail on one and succeed on another. Pick two, give them the same pictures and the same written answers, and use them regularly for a few weeks.

Keep whichever one gives you matches that answer. Do not run six at once. You will not have time to write to anyone properly.

If a paid tier tempts you, My rule is to buy it for a short stretch and keep it only if your results move. A tier multiplies what you already have, and an account with almost nothing gives it very little to multiply.

The part that follows you to every app

Every app on this list asks for the same two things. Pictures that show how you look now, and a few lines that only you could have written. My biggest point on choosing an app is about the profile you bring to it, not the app. A profile that reads as looking for a hookup gets hookups, and one that says you want something lasting gets that.

Switch if you have a reason. But fix the first picture and the first message before you reinstall anything, or you will carry the same results to a new place.
