The real smile
A real smile reaches your eyes. Your cheeks lift, the corners of your mouth rise, and your face looks loose instead of tight.
Use it when you first see her. Hold eye contact for a second, smile, and say, “Hey, good to see you.”
Don’t force a wide grin. A huge smile can look like you’re trying to win approval. Let the smile come and go. You’re happy to see her, not begging her to like you.
A small smile also works when she says something funny. You don’t need to laugh at every word. Look at her, smile, and let her see that you enjoy being there.
The slow smile
The slow smile starts in your eyes and reaches your mouth a moment later. It works when you hear something you like or notice a side of her that catches your attention.
Say she tells you she sneaks out of bed to eat cereal at night. Look at her for a second. Let one corner of your mouth lift. Then say, “That’s a strange habit. I like it.”
The pause matters. If you grin at once, your face can look eager. If you let the smile build, you look calm and sure of yourself.
Keep your jaw loose. Don’t press your lips together while you wait. That can make you look angry.
The soft eye look
Strong eye contact doesn’t mean staring without blinking. Keep your eyes on her, blink as you normally would, and let the muscles around your eyes stay soft.
Use this when she’s telling you a story. Look at her face while she speaks. Give a small nod when she makes a point. You don’t need to dart your eyes around the room or check your phone.
If your eyes feel too intense, look at her left eye, right eye, and mouth in a slow loop. Keep the movement small. She’ll see that you’re paying attention without feeling like you’re trying to pin her in place.
When she finishes, smile and say, “I can see why you did that.”
Your face should say, “I’m here with you.” It should not say, “I’m trying to inspect you.”
The raised eyebrow
A quick eyebrow lift shows surprise and interest. Use it when she says something bold, odd, or funny.
For example, she says, “I once quit a job by leaving my keys on the desk.”
Lift your brows, lean back a little, and say, “You just walked out?”
That expression gives her room to explain. It also keeps the talk from sounding like a list of questions.
Do it once, then let your face settle. If your brows stay high, you can look shocked by everything she says. You want a short reaction, not a cartoon face.
The amused look
The amused look says you’re enjoying the moment. One side of your mouth rises. Your eyes narrow a little. Your head may tilt to the side.
Use it when she gives you a hard time.
She says, “You look like you spend too much time fixing your hair.”
You can smile with one side of your mouth and say, “You noticed. That makes two of us.”
Then move on. Don’t explain the joke. Don’t make a speech about how confident you are. Your face and one short line are enough.
This look only works when you stay kind. If your lips curl and your eyes go cold, you look like you’re mocking her. Let your eyes smile too.
The focused look
A focused face shows that you care about what she’s saying. Your forehead stays still. Your eyes stay on her. Your lips rest without a fake smile.
Use it when she talks about something serious, such as a family problem or a hard choice at work.
You can say, “What did you do after that?”
Keep your face open. Don’t nod over and over. Don’t raise your brows in shock. Let her finish before you answer.
Many men try to look fun all the time. That can make them seem careless. A calm, focused face shows that you can handle more than jokes and flirting.
The look before you speak
Sometimes the best expression comes before your words. You look at her, take one calm breath, and smile a little before you answer.
Use it when she asks, “What are you thinking?”
Look at her for a moment and say, “I was deciding if you always cause this much trouble.”
Your face makes the line playful. Without the smile and eye contact, the same words may sound harsh.
Keep the pause short. A long pause can make the moment feel heavy. One breath is enough. Then speak.
Your face must match your body
Facial expressions work best when your whole body agrees with them. Stand with your chest open. Keep both feet on the floor. Turn your body toward her. Put your phone away.
Don’t smile while your arms are tight across your chest. Don’t use warm eyes while you keep looking at the door. She will trust your body more than your words.
Practice in a mirror for a few minutes. Say a normal line, such as, “That’s funny,” and watch your face. If your smile looks forced, make it smaller. If your eyes look hard, relax your forehead and jaw.
The goal isn’t to act like a different man. It’s to let your real interest show on your face. A woman can feel the difference between a man who is present and a man who is performing.
