Section 01

The shirt is only one part of the outfit

A black T-shirt works because it is simple. It doesn't fight with the rest of your clothes. It also makes your shoulders look wider when the sleeves stop at the right spot.

Look at the sleeve first. It should end around the middle of your upper arm. If it reaches your elbow, the shirt may look too large. If it stops high on your arm and cuts into your skin, it may be too small.

Check the body of the shirt next. The cloth should follow your chest and stomach without pulling across them. You should be able to pinch a small fold of cloth at your side. If you can grab a handful, the shirt is too loose.

The bottom should sit near your belt. A shirt that hangs past your hips can make your legs look short. A shirt that ends above your belt can look like a crop top.

A good black T-shirt has a firm collar. The neck should sit flat against your skin. If the collar has gone soft and wavy, stop wearing it outside the house. Black cloth also fades fast. Once the shirt looks gray at the chest and shoulders, replace it.

The best shirt in your closet is the one that fits your body today. Do not buy a smaller shirt as a plan for losing weight. Buy clothes for the body you have when you walk into the bar.

Section 02

Build the outfit around the black shirt

You don't need a closet full of loud pieces. You need a few items that fit well and work together.

Start with pants that give the shirt some shape. Dark blue jeans work well because they add color without pulling attention from your face. Straight-leg jeans are a safe choice. They leave room at your thighs and don't hang over your shoes.

Black jeans can work too, but keep the shades close. A black shirt with faded black jeans can look careless. A black shirt with clean, dark jeans looks more put together.

Try this outfit:

  • A fitted black T-shirt
  • Dark blue straight-leg jeans
  • Clean white or black sneakers
  • A simple watch

Nothing screams for attention. Your face and voice stay at the center of the room.

You can also wear the shirt with olive pants. Olive adds color without making the outfit loud. Add brown boots or clean white sneakers. Make sure the shoes are in good shape. Women notice dirty shoes when they stand close to you.

Don't pile on five details to make a plain shirt look interesting. A silver chain, a watch, and a clean pair of shoes are enough. If the chain is thick, the watch is huge, and the shoes have bright logos, each item pulls in a different direction.

Section 03

Fit beats price

A cheap shirt that fits your shoulders can look better than an expensive shirt that hangs off your body. You don't need a large budget to look clean.

Try on clothes before you buy them when you can. Turn to the side in a mirror. Look at the line from your chest to your waist. The shirt should not puff out like a small tent.

Move your arms. Reach for a glass. Sit down. If the shirt rides up and shows your stomach, it may be too short. If the sleeves twist around your arms, the cut may not suit your body.

Pants need the same check. The waist should stay up without a tight belt. The cloth should fall cleanly from your hips to your shoes. Too much cloth at the ankles makes your legs look shorter. No cloth at all can make the pants look too small.

Your clothes should let you move with ease. If you keep pulling at your shirt during a date, you won't pay attention to her. Fix the fit before you leave home.

Section 04

Use color without looking loud

Black is easy because it matches almost everything. You still need some color near your face and shoes.

A blue overshirt over a black T-shirt adds shape. Leave it open so the black shirt stays visible. Roll the sleeves once if they hang too low. Do not roll them five times and turn the cuffs into thick bands.

A tan jacket can also work. It gives the outfit a clear top and bottom. Pair it with dark jeans and simple shoes. Avoid wearing a black shirt, black jacket, black jeans, and black shoes unless every piece has a clean fit. One loose black item can make the whole outfit look flat.

Your skin tone matters too. Hold a shirt near your face in a store mirror. If the black makes your skin look dull, wear a lighter jacket or overshirt. White, cream, olive, blue, and tan are easy colors to test.

You don't need to know the names of every shade. Stand under good light and ask one question: does my face look awake in this?

Section 05

Grooming finishes the outfit

A good shirt cannot cover dirty nails, dry lips, or hair that has not been cut in months. Women don't judge one item in a vacuum. They see the whole picture.

Wash your shirt after each wear if you sweat in it. Use a lint roller before you leave. Check the armpits, collar, and front for marks. Keep a spare shirt at home for nights when the first one picks up food or sweat.

Clean your shoes with a damp cloth. Trim your nails. Use a small amount of hair product if your hair needs help staying in place. Wear a light amount of scent. She should notice it when she stands close, not from the other side of the room.

One guy I coached wore black shirts every night. His shirts fit well, but his jeans sagged and his white sneakers had gray soles. He bought one pair of straight dark jeans and cleaned the sneakers. He didn't change his whole style. He simply removed the parts that made him look careless.

That is why a man in a black T-shirt can give useful fashion advice. He has fewer places to hide. The fit, shoes, hair, and details have to work.

Wear the simple outfit. Make each piece clean, fitted, and easy to see.
