Every match on The League comes with a countdown. The clock starts as soon as the match is made, and if 14 days pass without either of you sending a message, the match expires. Any exchange of messages resets the clock, so a conversation that stays alive never runs out of time.

How the countdown works

The timer starts when the match is made, not when you first open the chat. So if a woman matches with you on a busy Monday and you do not look at The League until the following week, a good part of her 14 days is already gone.

When the countdown reaches zero with nothing sent, the match expires and ends up in the Expired tab. From there, your one route back is Rematch, and it is not free.

Any exchange starts the clock again

The League says any message exchange resets the countdown. So the timer only bites when a conversation goes silent.

That makes the rule gentle for men who actually talk to their matches. Write within a day or two, get a reply, and the count starts over. If the chat goes quiet for a week while you are both busy, a quick exchange puts you back at the start.

The men it catches are the ones who match and then say nothing, and the ones who let a good conversation drift for two weeks without a word.

What the timer tells you

Whatever the thinking behind it, the timer has one plain effect. It rewards whoever writes, and it clears away matches that nobody is doing anything with.

That is useful to know. A match is not a result. It is permission to start a conversation, and it has a shelf life. Men who collect matches and plan to write later are the ones who open the Expired tab and find women they meant to talk to.

a dating coach puts this well from his own dating. If he goes on a date and there is simply no chemistry, he can live with that. What bothers him is losing a woman he had a real chance with because of something he did wrong. An expired match is exactly that kind of loss. Nothing went wrong between you. You just never wrote.

Bringing a match back with Rematch

If a match does expire, The League gives you one way to try to get it back. Open the Expired tab, find her, and use Rematch.

Rematch is not free. The League says it needs an a la carte purchase, or a membership on one of the tiers that includes it. Before you pay, ask yourself an honest question. If 14 days went by and neither of you wrote, how keen was either of you?

Sometimes the answer is that you had a hectic fortnight and she is worth it. Then pay, and write to her the same evening, because a Rematch you do nothing with is money thrown away. Sometimes the answer is that you both let it slide, and the money is better spent on a woman you will actually talk to.

Write inside the first day

The simplest fix costs nothing. Send a first message within a day of every match.

My routine on any app is short and fixed, roughly thirty minutes a day broken into a morning session and an evening one. Inside those sittings he works in order. He starts with his favorites and with anyone close to a date, moves on to chats already under way, and then writes first messages to any match still waiting for one. Looking for new people comes last. Follow that order and no match sits long enough for the timer to matter.

Your first message does not need to be perfect. It needs to exist. A short line about something she chose to share beats a brilliant one that stays in your head for a week.

If you are late, do not open with an apology. A long explanation of your busy week puts the focus on you and sounds anxious. A light line about something on her page, written as if no time had passed, does far more for you.

Keep the conversation moving toward a date

A conversation that stays alive is not the same as one that is going somewhere. Pages of chat about her weekend will keep the clock from running out, and they still end without a date.

Once she is replying well, suggest a drink on a specific evening. Then get her number, so the plan no longer depends on the app or anything inside it. From that point on, the 14 days stop being your problem.
