When a card has no distance on it, the likeliest reason is that she is a subscriber who hid it. Tinder says subscribers can hide specific information such as age and distance. Tinder also says these options vary by location and may not be available to every user. If distance is missing on every card, check that you have given Tinder access to your own location.
Subscribers can hide it on purpose
Tinder's help page says subscribers have the ability to hide specific information, with age and distance as the two examples. So a blank where the miles should be is often a choice she made, and not a glitch in your app.
A woman may do that for privacy, because she does not want a stranger working out which part of town she lives in. That is a sensible habit and not a warning sign. A blank distance tells you nothing about her except that she would rather not show it.
Tinder adds that profile information options may vary by location and might not be available to all users. So if a friend in another country tells you he can hide his own distance and you cannot find the option, that difference is normal.
Does distance show when someone is not active?
Men often ask whether Tinder shows distance for someone who has not been on the app lately. The pages we read do not tie the two together. Tinder describes distance and activity separately, and gives no rule that says inactive people lose their distance.
What Tinder does say about activity is this. Green dots next to a name show potential matches who were online in the last 24 hours. Online Now means someone was active in the last two hours. Both can be turned off in Settings.
So a missing dot does not mean a missing distance, and a missing distance does not mean she is inactive. They are two separate settings, and the only way to tell which one you are looking at is to read the card.
If your own app shows no distance, or a huge one
If the number is missing on every card, the problem is probably on your side. To use Tinder you need to give it access to your device's location. On iOS that means choosing While Using the App, and on Android it means Only While Using the App.
Without that permission, Tinder cannot place you, so it has no distance to show. Open your phone's settings, find Tinder, and check the location setting. Close the app and reopen it afterwards.
A distance can also be present and huge. Tinder says you can see profiles that are far away because they may be using Passport to look at potential matches in your current location. A woman planning a trip may be browsing your city well before she lands.
If a card says she is a long way off, she may not be where the number says. Keep that in mind before you decide anything about her.
Do not skip a blank, ask about it
Some men skip every card without a distance, on the theory that she must be hiding something. That throws away women for a reason that has nothing to do with them.
a dating coach makes the point that matching is cheap and that what counts is whether a match becomes a real conversation. A woman who hides her distance can still be ten minutes from your front door. You will not know until you ask, and asking costs one line.
When you match with a woman and cannot tell where she is, put the question in your first few lines and keep it light. "Where in the city are you based?" is easy to answer, it shows you want to meet, and it sorts the possible dates from the impossible ones before either of you invests an evening.
If she is close, suggest a plan. Name a day and a type of place in your next few messages. A conversation that goes on for a week with no plan attached tends to fade, however well it started.
If she is far away or says she is only browsing, you have your answer, and you have spent two lines finding it out.
Hiding your own distance
If you are the one asking how not to show it, the same rule applies from the other side. Tinder says subscribers can hide age and distance. Your name and age are the only details Tinder says you cannot edit once an account is created, so a hidden age and an edited age are different things.
Think before you hide your distance, though. A woman who sees no number on your card has less to go on, and a man who looks hard to place is one a cautious woman will skip. If you are open to dates near home, showing it is the simpler choice.
The short version
A missing distance is usually a subscriber who chose to hide it, or a phone with no location access. Tinder gives no rule that ties distance to activity, and the green dots are a separate thing. Do not skip a woman for a blank, and ask where she is in your first few lines.
