She keeps coming back because you are familiar, easy to reach and ask nothing of her. That is the plain version. When a situationship disappears for two weeks and then reappears with "hey, I was thinking about you," it usually means she wants the comfort of you without the commitment of you. It does not usually mean she has finally decided she wants more. Judge the return by what she offers this time, not by how nice it feels.
The usual reasons she returns
There are a few common ones, and they can overlap.
- She is lonely or bored. Her week went flat, and you are the easy text.
- She is keeping options open. Other plans fell through, or she is not sure about someone else.
- You offer comfort with no terms. You show up, you listen, you do not ask where this is going.
- She misses you, but not enough to commit. The feeling is real. It is just not enough to change her actions.
- It stopped feeling urgent. When you stop chasing, some women feel the distance and reach out.
Only the last two involve any real feeling for you, and even those do not tell you she will act on it. A person can miss you and still not want to date you.
Why it works on you
When she goes quiet, you feel the loss. When she returns, you feel relief, and your mind reads that relief as proof that she cares. You have been shown a pause and a reunion, and you remember the reunion.
That is why you can know it is a bad deal and still answer within a minute. The relief arrives so quickly that it feels like love. coach notes that eagerness is what women notice: a man who replies in seconds after a long silence shows her she is the main thing in his life. Answering fast tells her she can disappear and still have you.
Ask what changed
Before you reply, compare this return to the last one. Ask yourself three questions:
- Is she offering anything she did not offer before: a plan, a label, a conversation about what you are?
- Did she explain the silence, or act as if nothing happened?
- If this goes the same way as last time, will I be glad I said yes?
If the honest answer to the first two is no, the return is the same offer with a new date.
What to say when she texts
You do not owe a fast answer. You also do not need to be cold. Answer when it suits you, in a calm and short way.
If you want to test it: "Hey. Good to hear from you. I have been thinking about what I want, and I would like something more solid. Is that something you want too?"
If you are done: "Thanks for reaching out. I am not going to keep going back and forth, so I will pass. I wish you well."
Either one works because it says something clear and does not ask her to guess. coach calls a relationship an agreement about what you are to each other. A situationship is the absence of one, and the way to end the cycle is to ask for one, or step out.
Set your rule before the next return
The hardest moment is the one when her text lands and you feel yourself leaning toward yes. Decide now what you will do, while your head is clear.
A rule you can keep: the next time she comes back, you will say once, in plain words, what you want. If she answers with a real plan, a label or a clear next step, you go forward. If she gets vague, you let the conversation end, kindly, and you do not reopen it.
Write the rule down. A decision made in advance holds up better than one made at 11 p.m. with her name on your screen.
If you want her back on real terms
It is fair to want it. Make it conditional on things you can see.
- She names what you are to each other.
- She makes plans and keeps them.
- She is as available in the dull weeks as in the exciting ones.
- She explains the past silences without making you the problem.
Give it a short test period of a few weeks. If her actions match her words, good. If the old disappearing act returns with the first stressful week, you have your answer.
If you want it to stop
Make it hard for yourself to slip. Mute her for a while, delete the conversation from your main screen, and fill the evenings that used to be hers with gym time, friends or new people. My reasoning about relationships holds here too: put your energy into your own goals, so that when you re-enter dating you are in a stronger place than before.
If she messages anyway, you do not have to answer. Silence is a full reply.
The takeaway
A situationship that keeps returning is not a sign that she is slowly moving toward you. It is a sign that the current setup suits her. The way out is to stop auditioning for a label and either ask for one clearly or leave.
