The app does not extend a chat on its own schedule. Each of your matches starts a seven-day timer. A chat only gets longer because of something you or she did. Either a message was sent inside the last 72 hours of that week, or Beans were spent to reopen a chat that already closed. If neither happens, the chat ends when the timer runs out.
The seven-day timer is the default
Each match on Coffee Meets Bagel gets a chat that stays open for seven days. The app's store listing says the limit is there to help move the conversation into real life.
That is the reason behind the whole system. The app wants matches to become dates, so it puts a clock on the conversation. An extension is a small reward for a chat that is still alive near the end, not a favor handed out at random.
What triggers the extension
To keep a chat open past the seven days, a message has to be sent during the 72 hours before it expires. Send one in that window and the chat gets three more days, counted from when it was meant to close, not from when you wrote.
So a message on the sixth day and a message on the last afternoon buy the same new closing time. Writing earlier in the window does not stretch it any further.
If you saw a chat marked as extended, that window is the usual explanation. Someone wrote near the end of the week.
Where the two help pages disagree
The app's own help pages do not word this rule the same way. The help page for the US and Canada says either person sending a message in the final 72 hours is enough. The Worldwide help page says a chat stays active as long as both people send at least one message in that window, and that if only one person writes, the chat closes on its expiry date.
Follow the stricter reading, because you cannot tell from the chat itself which one applies to your account. That changes what you should send. A message that closes with a question she can answer in one line gives her a reason to write back inside the window, which covers you under either version.
Reopening a closed chat
Once a chat has closed, it can be reopened at any time with Beans. The app shows this as Extend Chat on iPhone and Android, and a reopened chat stays open for another 30 days.
Beans are the in-app currency, and reopening is one of the things they pay for. The cost is paid in Beans, and the app adjusts the amount, so check the figure in the app before you pay.
There is one hard limit. If the other person unmatches, leaves the chat, deletes their account or is banned, the chat disappears and Coffee Meets Bagel cannot reopen it. No amount of Beans changes that.
Do not let the extension become the plan
The extension is a safety net. It is not a strategy.
a dating coach's view of messaging is that its point is to meet, and that a man who keeps chatting without ever suggesting a plan has forgotten that. A seven-day timer pushes against that habit, and an easy extension can quietly bring it back. Three more days feels like permission to keep chatting without committing to anything.
Use the first week as your working window instead. Open the day you match, trade a few light messages mostly about her, and suggest a specific place and evening once she is answering quickly and asking you things back. If she agrees, take her number so the plan does not depend on an app clock.
When paying to reopen is worth it
Reopening makes sense when a chat closed for a dull reason. You both were warm, a busy week got in the way, and a light message that owns the gap can bring it back. Something like "My week disappeared on me. Did you ever try that ramen place?" does the job without a long apology.
It makes much less sense when the chat closed because she stopped answering. A chat that lapsed while you waited on her has already told you what she decided, and Beans do not change a decision.
a dating coach treats paid features as tests. Spend on one when you have a reason to think it will help, check whether it produced a date, and stop if it did not. Put your Beans on the chats where the interest was already there, and give the rest of your evenings to women who are answering.
