Good looks get you noticed. They do not get you a girlfriend, because a girlfriend is a woman who wants to keep seeing you after the first few conversations, and that depends on what you do once she has noticed you. A good-looking man who collects attention and never lands a second date is usually in one of four places. He waits for women to do the work, he never turns a chat into a plan, he is not meeting enough women, or he never practiced the social side of dating. None of the four is about your face.
Looks open the door and nothing more
a dating coach makes this point in a short clip on whether looks matter. His answer is not that looks are irrelevant. It is that they matter less than most men think. He says a woman cares more about how other people respond to you socially, what kind of life you can offer her, and what you add to hers.
So the cues that decide things are mostly not in the photo. How you talk, whether you seem comfortable around women, and whether the people around you like you all weigh more than bone structure. A handsome man who skipped those cues gets the first look and loses the second.
Swiping and collecting matches instead of going on dates
When you look good, women reply, smile and start conversations. That feels like progress. It is easy to confuse it with dating.
Count something different for two weeks. Of the women who wrote to you, how many did you meet in person? Of those you met, how many did you see a second time? A man can have a busy inbox and a calendar with nothing in it. If that is you, the problem is not that women do not like you. It is that the attention is not turning into plans.
Nobody made you learn the skills
A man with an easy start gets less practice than a man who has to work for every date. If women always responded warmly, you never had to learn how to tease. You never learned to carry a conversation when she gives short answers, or to ask for a day and a place without sounding unsure.
The result looks like this on a first date: you are pleasant, polite and forgettable. She enjoyed the evening and has no particular reason to want another one. Charm that comes from your looks fades when the conversation has nothing specific in it. Give her something to remember. An opinion, a story or a small joke at your own expense will do.
You may not be meeting enough women
On a long list of reasons men gave for being single, coach points to the most upvoted one: not leaving the house. He calls it probably the biggest reason men are single, because you cannot date women you do not meet. Even a man who uses dating apps has to leave the house for the dates.
Good looks make each meeting easier. They do not create the meetings. If your week is work, the gym and a screen, you have a handsome man in a small circle. Put yourself where women are: classes, coffee shops, events, friends of friends. My suggestions include dance and yoga classes and nightlife, because those places gather lots of women in a social mood.
Waiting to be picked
Handsome men are often used to being approached. So they wait, and some of them mistake waiting for being selective.
A woman who likes you and has not heard anything from you will move on. She is not sitting there guessing. If you want a girlfriend, you have to be the one who suggests the drink, picks the place and says you would like to see her again. Asking does not lower your value. It shows her you want something and are willing to go and get it.
Being picky is a different thing. Choose women you actually like, then act on it. Do not wait for the perfect one to approach you.
Changes to make this month
Pick a few changes and stick with them.
- When a conversation is going well, ask for a date within a few messages. Name a day and a place instead of saying "we should hang out."
- Track dates, not matches. Your target is a number of first dates per week, and second dates after that.
- Go out two or three evenings a week where you can talk to women face to face.
- Ask a friend who is honest to tell you how you come across on a date. Listen without defending yourself.
- On each date, say one specific thing about yourself that she can react to. A vague answer to "what do you do for fun?" wastes your best chance.
- Do not drop a woman you liked because one date felt average. Give a second date a fair try.
When the doubt is about your own head
Some good-looking men are also sure there is something wrong with them, because their looks should have worked by now. That belief can make you stiff on dates and quick to read one cool reply as a verdict.
Treat it as a skill gap, not a defect. Skills improve with practice. Every man who gets good at this started out bad at it, and the ones who improve fastest are the ones willing to keep going after an awkward evening. Your face gives you more first chances than most men get. What you do with them is what produces a girlfriend.
