Most of the time a girl who will not meet your eyes is shy, nervous, distracted or not interested in talking, and from one look you cannot tell which. Avoiding eye contact is common when someone likes a person and does not know what to do about it, and it is equally common when someone wants to be left alone. The answer comes from everything else she is doing, not from the eyes alone.
The usual reasons
Think of the four most common causes, from most to least likely.
- Shyness or nerves. Plenty of women find direct eye contact with a stranger hard, especially a man. It has nothing to do with you personally.
- Attraction she is hiding. When people like someone, they sometimes look away because holding the look feels too exposed. The tell is that she looks back, then away again.
- Distraction. She is checking her phone, watching a friend, or thinking about something else.
- No interest. She would like the conversation to end and is using her eyes to say it.
a dating coach's point about body language fits well here: a single gesture does not make or break an interaction, because she is adding up everything you give her. Treat her eyes the same way, as one signal among many.
How to tell which one it is
Look at the whole picture for a minute, not just the eyes.
Likely nerves or interest:
- She keeps turning toward you, even when she looks away.
- She answers your questions with more than a word and asks one back.
- She smiles, laughs, fidgets, or touches her hair or her cup.
- She glances at you when you are talking to someone else.
Likely not interested:
- Her body angles away from you, toward the door or her friends.
- Her answers are short and she asks nothing back.
- She keeps her phone in her hand and does not put it down.
- She moves to create space whenever you step closer.
If the first list sounds like her, relax and keep going. If the second does, thank her and leave her alone.
What to do if she seems shy
Make it easier for her. Ease the pressure by looking at what you are talking about, not at her face.
- Keep your own eye contact soft and brief, a second or two at a time, then look away at something real, like the room or what she is holding.
- Smile, then talk. A small smile tells her you are friendly, so the look is not a challenge.
- Ask a question that is easy to answer. "How do you know the host?" is better than anything personal.
- Stand beside her instead of facing her. Side by side feels lighter than across a table.
Let her warm up. Many shy women look at you more after five minutes, once they believe you are not trying anything. If she is still avoiding your eyes after that, but staying and talking, she is probably just a person who does not use much eye contact.
What to do if she looks away and goes quiet
That is a sign she wants space. Say something short like "nice meeting you" and move on. Do not stand near her, do not stare, and do not come back to try again. A man who reads this kindly keeps a good reputation in the room, and the room remembers.
If you are the one who avoids eye contact
Some men read the question the other way: why do I avoid eye contact with girls? It is common, and it is fixable.
a dating coach points out that expecting a bad reaction changes how you look at people. When you brace for a negative response, your eye contact shifts, along with your body language and your tone of voice. If you expect a friendly response, you tend to get one, and your eyes follow.
His fix is to practice in small steps. His plan for approach nerves starts with walking around and making eye contact with women, holding it when it is returned. Next you ask someone for directions, then you thank her, and you work up from there. The first step is only a look, and each step after it is small. Holding someone's gaze for a second stops feeling like a big deal once you have done it a lot. Add a small smile when it is returned, and say hello when you are ready.
One caution: do not hold it too long. A look that lasts a second or two and ends in a smile is warm. A look that lasts five seconds is a stare.
The short version
One look is not an answer. A girl who avoids your eyes could be shy, nervous, distracted or uninterested, and her posture, her answers and whether she stays tell you which. Be relaxed, smile, make it easy for her to talk, and respect it when she wants to go.
