It starts as the best thing that has happened on the apps in months. She replies instantly. She is funny. By the second evening she is calling you babe, asking what you are doing at the weekend after next, and telling you she does not normally do this.

Nothing about that feels like a problem. It feels like being picked. That is exactly why men walk into it with their eyes open and still miss what they are looking at.

Section 01

What moving too fast actually looks like

Not keenness. Keenness is good and you want it. The thing to notice is intensity that has outrun the amount of time you have known each other.

Messages from the moment she wakes up until she goes to sleep, every day, from day one. Pet names before you have met. Talk about holidays together, or meeting each other's families, inside the first week. Declarations that do not fit the evidence: that she has never been able to talk to anyone this way, that she knew straight away, that you are different.

And the tell underneath all of it. None of it depends on you. You could be replacing a dozen other men and the messages would not need rewriting, because they are not about anything you have specifically said or done.

Section 02

It is information, not flattery

Real feeling is built out of things that happened. She liked how you handled a story about your boss. She noticed you are funnier by text after nine. You cannot build that on a stranger in two days, because the raw material has not been supplied yet.

So when the warmth is enormous and the history is empty, the warmth is coming from somewhere other than you. That is the whole insight, and it costs you nothing to hold it lightly while you find out which of the usual reasons applies.

Section 03

What it usually means

Three things, roughly in order of how often they turn up.

It is an account after money. Fast affection is the working method, because the sooner you feel attached the sooner an emergency can be introduced. If the intensity is also paired with a woman who can never meet, you already know.

It is a real woman in a bad spot. Just out of something, lonely, or looking for somebody to be the answer. The feeling is genuine and the speed is the problem. These can go somewhere, but not at that pace, and often the crash is as fast as the climb.

Or it is simply how she is. Some people are intense and stay intense, and if you are the same you will get on fine. This one is real, and it is the reason the answer is never to run.

Section 04

Why men ignore it

Because it arrives looking like the thing they wanted.

A man who has had four dead conversations this month is in no state to be suspicious of the one woman who is enthusiastic. He has spent weeks being ignored, and now someone is delighted by him. Questioning that feels ungrateful and slightly mad.

There is a second reason, and it is quieter. Being wanted that hard is a relief from doing the hard part yourself. If she is running the whole thing, you do not have to risk anything. Plenty of men go along with a pace they do not believe in because the alternative is going back to sending first messages.

Section 05

Slow it down without killing it

You do not need a conversation about pace. Talking about the speed of the thing at day three is heavier than the speed itself.

Just answer at the rate you would answer a woman you liked and had a job. Warm, not instant. Do not match the pet names. Do not agree to plans that live a month away. Stay entirely pleasant and simply do not accelerate.

Then do the one thing that settles it. Suggest something ordinary this week.

"All this typing is wasted on a screen. Drink on Thursday?"

A woman who is real and just enthusiastic says yes and is pleased. A woman in a bad spot often says yes too, and the date tells you the rest. An account working you for money will produce a reason, and then another, and you have your answer without having accused anybody of anything.

Section 06

Watch what happens when you slow down

This is the part worth paying attention to, because it is honest information you get for free.

If the warmth survives you being a normal amount of available, she meant it. If it turns into sulking, guilt, or an accusation that you are losing interest, you have found out in week one what would otherwise have taken three months. And if it vanishes the moment you stop feeding it at full speed, it was never pointed at you.

Section 07

When you are the one doing it

Worth asking, because it is common and almost invisible from the inside.

Double texting when she has not replied. Saying more than the moment can carry. Clearing your week for a woman you have met once. The cause is the same as hers: it has been a dry year and this one feels like it matters, so the pressure goes up and she can feel it in every message.

If that is you, the fix is not restraint by willpower. It is having more going on, so no single conversation has to carry the weight.

Section 08

When the same thing keeps happening

If you keep ending up in fast, intense conversations that collapse, or you keep being the one applying the pressure, that is a habit rather than a run of bad luck, and it is nearly impossible to see in your own messages because you knew what you meant when you typed them.

An hour on a call with a coach, with your last few conversations open in front of him, will usually name it inside ten minutes. Not general advice about pace. The specific thing you do, in your words, at the point where it turns.

After that you can see it happening while it is happening, which is the only version of this that ever actually changes.
