In most cases it means she saw your message and was busy or did not know what to say. It rarely means she has a verdict about you. A read receipt only proves that the message reached her screen. It says nothing about how she feels, and it does not say when she will answer. On dating apps and in texts alike, the right response is to wait, not to send a second message.

What a read receipt actually tells you

A message marked as read means she opened it. That is all. She may have opened it on a train, in a meeting, in the middle of a conversation, or while half asleep. She meant to answer later, and later turned into tomorrow.

Women get a lot of messages, and every reply costs a little thought. Leaving yours unanswered for a few hours is the most ordinary thing in the world. You are probably reading far more into it than she put in.

The usual reasons, from most to least likely

She is busy. Work, friends, family, a dead phone. The message was seen and never answered.

She does not know what to say. This one is the most useful, because you control it. coach says to test every text by imagining you were the woman receiving it: could you think of something to reply? If your message was a flat statement, a bare "hey," or something that gives her nowhere to go, she may have no natural reply. A text that is hard to answer in the wrong way is a common cause of silence.

She is deciding. If you asked her out or asked for her number, she may need time to decide, and she will come back to it when she has.

She is not very interested. This is possible, and you should keep it in mind. It is also the least informative option on its own, because the same silence is produced by all four reasons.

Do not decide what it means from one message

You cannot read her feelings from a single read receipt. What you can do is watch what she does over several days. Does she answer some messages quickly and let others sit? Does she ask you questions back? Does she suggest times?

If she answers most things and sometimes stalls, she is busy or distracted. If she lets two separate messages sit unanswered and never suggests a meeting, she is telling you something, whatever her thumb is doing on the screen.

What to do right now

Wait. My rule is to avoid double texting. A second message soon after the first shows that you were worried, and it points at your first message as a problem. Give her at least a day, and often two.

Do not send "??" or "Did you see my message?" Do not send a screenshot of the read receipt. Do not send a message that complains about being ignored. Each of these makes the next reply harder to write.

If you need to send something

After a day or two, one fresh message is fine. It should be light, not about the silence, and easy to answer. Something small and specific, like: "Just walked past the world's saddest food truck. It reminded me of the waffle story. Did you ever find out who won?"

Check My test before you send it: if you were her, could you reply? Give her a clear thing to react to, such as a question with a short answer, a tease she can push back on, or a specific plan.

If your earlier message was an invitation, you can follow up once with a concrete suggestion: "Thursday or Saturday works for me." Then leave it.

Do not read too much into your own habits either

Part of the reason men fixate on read receipts is that they check them constantly. My advice on timing applies to you too. A normal reply time of an hour or a few hours is healthy, and answering in seconds every time looks like you are waiting by the phone. You can reduce a lot of stress by not watching the screen at all.

You also have the right to remain silent. If a conversation reaches a natural end, or you are not meeting anytime soon, you do not have to reply immediately. A short pause can make a woman think about you more, not less.

When to treat it as a no

Count two separate unanswered messages and no proposal from her about meeting. Then let it go. Do not ask her where you stand, do not post something to provoke her, and do not block her to make a point.

Keep your own life full, keep messaging women you like, and treat each quiet one as information rather than an injury. A woman who wants to talk to you will usually find a way to answer.
