In any relationship with an older woman the rules are short. Be direct about what you want. Have a life of your own. Respect her time. Treat her as an equal, not a trophy or a stand-in for your mother. A woman who is older than you has usually heard every line already, so the men who do well are the ones who are simply steady and honest.

A note on the word. Plenty of women do not like "cougar," and almost none enjoy hearing it from a man they just met. Use it in conversation with friends if you must, and never to her.

Rule one: say what you want

Older women generally have less patience for guessing games, and they have good reason. They have already spent years on men who were vague, so a man who says clearly what he is after stands out.

If you want something casual, say so in plain words and early. If you want something serious, say that. Do not hint, and do not let her find out on the fourth date that you were never planning to meet her friends. Directness is attractive here because it removes the one thing she is most wary of.

Rule two: have your own life

A woman who has built a career, a home and a routine is not looking for a man who will rearrange himself around her. She wants someone who has things going on: work, friends, a hobby he talks about with energy.

This rule is partly about attraction and partly about respect. If you are drifting and use the relationship to fill your week, she will notice quickly. If you are busy and building something, she will see a man worth planning around.

Rule three: respect her schedule and her kids

Many older women have children, a demanding job, or both. Do not treat a rescheduled date as an insult. Offer two or three options, suggest places near her, and be flexible about timing.

If she has kids, do not push to meet them early and do not pretend to be more interested than you are. Children are not a bonus feature. Meeting them is a big step for her, and she decides when.

Rule four: do not turn it into a mother story

Some men are drawn to older women because they want to be looked after. That is a bad foundation. A woman does not want to cook for you, remind you of appointments, or manage your moods.

Behave like a grown man: show up on time, plan the evening, pay attention, and make your own decisions. If you find yourself wanting her to take charge of your life, deal with that on your own before you start dating anyone.

Rule five: do not make age the whole subject

Two kinds of men ruin this early. One keeps joking about her age, and the other keeps mentioning how much younger he is as if it were a prize. Both make her feel like an item in a category.

Treat her as a person who happens to be older. Ask what she does, what she loves and where she wants to travel. If age comes up, answer lightly and move on. If she brings it up, she may be testing whether it bothers you, and a calm, unbothered reply is the right one.

Rule six: be honest about the practical parts

Talks about money, living arrangements, exclusivity and future plans are easier with an older woman. They only work if you are honest. Do not let her pay for everything and call it a gift, and do not act as if you are in the same financial position when you are not. Do not promise a future you are unlikely to want.

Here, too, being straight is better than being smooth. She will respect a man who says "I'm not ready for that yet" far more than one who stays vague and lets her make decisions on bad information.

Ordinary places that work

Older women are not concentrated on one app or at one venue. Ordinary places work best: a good coffee shop, a bookstore, a gallery opening, a restaurant bar, a gym class, a friend's dinner. Walk up in daylight, say something direct and friendly, and give her a reason to stay in the conversation for a few minutes.

Men who get comfortable doing that with women of every age find these rules easy to follow. They all come back to one thing: say what you mean and pay attention to the person in front of you.

None of these rules is special to older women. They are the habits of a man who is easy to trust: he says what he means, he is not hiding anything, and he treats her time as valuable. If you already live that way, she will notice within a couple of dates. If you do not, she will notice that too.
