The clearest green flags in early dating are a woman who does what she says she will do, takes a small letdown calmly, asks you real questions and talks about her past without heat. None of these is exciting. That is the point. Early on, the signs of a relationship worth continuing look like ease, not fireworks, and you can check each one over the first three or four dates.
She does what she says
Watch the small promises first. She says she will text after work and she does. She says Thursday and shows up on Thursday, on time or with a short heads-up if she is late.
One flake does not condemn her, because people have bad weeks. A habit does. If she cancels once and moves the plan to a new day herself, that is a green flag. If she cancels and leaves you to chase a new time, that is the opposite. The first woman is telling you that your time counts. The second is telling you she will get to you when she gets to you.
She handles a small letdown well
Plans go wrong in the first weeks. The restaurant is full, it rains on the park day, you run twenty minutes late. How she reacts says more than a candlelit dinner ever could.
A woman worth continuing with shrugs, suggests the place next door, or laughs and turns it into a story. A woman who sulks, makes you pay for it with a cold hour, or hints at it for days is showing you how the next argument will go. Our article on the start of a new relationship makes the same point: notice how someone deals with small disappointments, because you will see a lot of them.
She is curious about you
Listen for follow-up questions. She asks about the trip you mentioned last week, remembers your sister's name, or wants to know why you chose your job. She is not interviewing you from a list. She is interested in the answer.
Test it with a throwaway detail. Mention that you fixed your bike on Sunday. If she brings up the bike two dates later, she was listening. Interest that includes memory is rare enough to count.
Her texting has a natural rhythm
coach, who has taught dating for over twenty years, warns men against rigid texting rules, and the same flexibility helps you read her. You are not counting minutes. You are looking for rhythm.
Green looks like this:
- She replies with more than a word, and sometimes with a question.
- She starts a conversation some of the time instead of waiting for you.
- Her pace is steady. Fast on a busy day is fine, slow on a busy day is fine, as long as the overall feel is relaxed.
- When she is busy she says so, instead of vanishing and reappearing.
Red is a thin trickle of replies that only ever answer what you asked.
She talks about her past without heat
Ask how her last relationship ended, and listen to the tone more than the content. A woman who says "we wanted different things and we're on fine terms" is calm about it. A woman who spends ten minutes on how awful he was, or who still talks about him constantly, is not finished with him.
coach puts a recent ex who is still close to her in the worry category for exactly this reason: two people with history, alone in a room, can slip back. He separates that sharply from an ex she dated at fifteen and has been friends with for a decade. Green is an ex who is history. If she mentions him once with no charge in her voice, you are fine.
You feel relaxed around her
Men skip this one because it points at them. Notice how you feel for the day after a date. If you replay what you said, wonder whether she likes you, and check your phone every ten minutes, something is off. Maybe she is giving mixed signals. Maybe you are anxious by nature and need to look at your own habits.
A good early dating experience tends to feel simple. You were yourself, she laughed, and you both knew where things stood when you parted. A woman who makes you feel steady is a green flag even when the chemistry is more gentle than explosive.
Things that look like green flags and are not
Some behavior gets mistaken for a good sign:
- Instant intensity. Telling you on date two that you are the one, texting all day, planning a holiday. Real interest builds. A rush of it often fades just as fast.
- Agreeing with everything. If she shares every opinion you have, she may be mirroring you, not matching you.
- Perfect compatibility. Nobody lines up on everything. A woman who can disagree with you politely is more trustworthy than one who never does.
How many green flags do you need
You are not scoring a test. A good rule is to look for the four basics: she keeps her word, she handles letdowns calmly, she is curious about you, and she is calm about her past. If you see all four over a month, keep going. If you see none, move on without a speech. If you see two, keep seeing her and watch which way it trends.
Then give her the same treatment in return. Say what you will do and do it. Stay calm when plans change. Ask real questions. Talk about your past without bitterness. A woman reading you for green flags is checking the same list.
