Zoosk is a real dating service, and it says so itself. It describes the app as a place where singles make genuine connections. It also says it works to keep the community authentic. That does not make every woman on it who she claims to be. Like every dating app, Zoosk gives you tools to check people and a short list of warning signs, and the safe approach is to use both before you meet anyone.
What Zoosk says it does
Zoosk says photos are reviewed before they appear on an account. It also says its team investigates reported accounts and takes action on anything that breaks its Terms of Service.
Those are claims from Zoosk's own help pages, and you should read them that way. They describe what the company says it does, and they are a reason to expect some filtering. They are not a reason to stop paying attention to who you are talking to.
The blue verified badge
Members can verify themselves with a quick selfie check. A blue verified badge means the person matches their photos.
Verification is optional, so plenty of real women will not have the badge. Still, the badge is the most useful signal you can see before you write. A woman with it has shown the app a live selfie. A woman without it might be just as real, but you have less to go on. If you want to be careful, give the verified accounts a head start in your attention.
It works for you too. A verified badge on your own account removes one easy reason for a woman to hesitate.
Reporting a fake account
The Report tool lets you flag a fake account or inappropriate behavior. Reports are anonymous and the member is not told. Reporting also blocks that member, so you will not see each other again.
Use it freely. Waiting to be sure helps no one. If a match turns out to be a scam, report her, and the next man does not have to find out the hard way.
The warning signs Zoosk lists
Zoosk's safety guidance names four signs:
- Someone pushing to move off Zoosk to text or another app very quickly.
- Someone professing strong feelings very fast.
- Someone who always avoids video calls.
- Stories that always involve an emergency needing money.
Zoosk is firm on the last one. It says no genuine member will ask you for money or financial information. If someone does, send nothing and report her.
One note on the first sign. Moving off an app to text is exactly what a man should be aiming for, since a date is the goal and not a chat. a dating coach gets a woman from the app to her number in about four to seven messages. The difference is in how it feels. A woman who suggests a plan and then trades numbers is behaving normally. A woman who asks for your number in the first message, before she has said anything real, is the one to be wary of. coach also says a woman who is far too forward, too early, is sometimes not a real person.
Check her before the first date
Zoosk recommends a video call before meeting in person. It is good advice, and coach does something very close to it. He does a phone or video call before dates, partly to confirm that the woman looks like her photos. A call takes ten minutes and tells you more than a week of typing.
For the first few dates, Zoosk suggests a public place, your own transportation, and telling a friend where you will be. None of it costs you anything, and a man who suggests a public place for a first meeting looks sensible, not nervous.
A short check before every first date
Run through four things before you meet any woman from Zoosk:
- Has she verified, or has she at least been willing to get on a video call?
- Is she asking you for money, in any form or for any reason?
- Did she push you off the app before she had said anything real?
- Does someone you trust know where you will be, and when?
If any answer troubles you, wait. A woman who is real and interested will still be there after a video call, and a woman who is not will not.
Is it worth your time
Safe and worth your time are different questions. coach stresses that the app matters. Some apps have more fake accounts and more people who are not looking to date, and good technique on the wrong app gets worse results than average technique on the right one.
So after you have checked that Zoosk is real, check that it works for you. Look at who is active near you. If the women you see are nearby and replying, the app is doing its job. If you are collecting matches and no replies, look at your photos and your first messages before you blame the dating app.
