Hily is worth trying, because the free version lets you browse women, match and chat without paying anything. It is worth paying for only after the free version is already giving you matches and you keep running into its limits. Nobody publishes how many men get dates from Hily, so treat any figure you read as a guess and run the test at the end of this article.
What the free version gives you
A free account covers the whole basic loop. You add your photos, browse women in Finder, match with the ones who like you back, and chat with your matches.
That loop is enough to go on a date. Nothing about the free version stops a man from getting a number and booking a drink. The limits are on volume and control, not on whether the app works at all, so there is no reason to pay before you have seen what the free version does for you.
What Premium adds
Premium is an optional subscription. It highlights your messages and lets you write to a woman before you match. It adds boosts, shows you who has already liked you, and removes ads. It also adds Incognito mode and advanced filters.
Two of those change who you end up talking to. Seeing who liked you means you stop guessing and answer women who have already said yes. Writing before a match, which Hily does through Major Crush, means you pick the woman instead of waiting for the app to pick you for her. The rest make the app calmer or more private, and none of them is a strong reason to pay on its own.
When paying is worth it
a dating coach's rule is that a paid feature is a multiplier. It multiplies whatever result you already have. If the free version gives you a few matches and a couple of conversations, paying can turn that into more of both. If the free version gives you nothing, multiplying nothing still gives you nothing.
He is also clear that never paying is a mistake. His view is that men are too reluctant to spend money on dating, and that an app has every reason to look after the members who pay. So the sensible plan is not "never" and not "always." It is to pay for one feature, watch your numbers, and drop it if nothing moves.
Who Hily suits
It suits a man who wants a second app beside his main one. It suits a man who will read a woman's card before he likes her, and who will answer a woman who liked him instead of letting her sit in his list for a week.
It does not suit a man hoping the app will do the work. A woman still decides on your photos and what you wrote, and Premium puts the same photos in front of more people. If your lead photo is dark or cropped, more reach only means more quick passes.
What to check before you pay
Look at who the app shows you in your area. My rule for choosing any app is that your results depend on whether the women on it are really looking to date. An app that is busy in one city can be quiet in another. A few days of free browsing tells you more than any review.
Then set your filters to something real. Pick an age range and a distance you would actually travel for a first drink. A smaller feed of women you would take out beats a huge feed of women you would not.
Finally, look at your own page. coach puts photos first, then what you write, then your first message. If you pay while those are weak, you are spending money to show a weak page to more women.
Run a two-week test
Give the free version two weeks with your best photos in place. Write down four numbers: women you liked, matches you got, conversations that started and dates you set.
If the matches are there but you keep hitting a limit, try one paid feature for a short stretch and compare. If the matches are not there, fix the photos and the first message before you spend anything. If you get dates but no second ones, the app is not the problem.
Hily is worth keeping if the free version gives you real conversations. It is worth paying for if one feature clearly raises those numbers. If neither is true after two weeks, drop it and put the time into an app where women reply to you.
