To flirt with a stranger, approach her, say hello and show that you like her in a playful way, then let her show you whether she likes it. Say something specific about why you came over, get curious about her and add a little humor. Watch how she responds and match her energy. It is not a set of lines. It is a short conversation with a spark in it.
If you have never done this, start smaller than you think. The goal of the first approaches is simply to walk up and say hello. The flirting comes easier once your body stops treating that as an emergency.
What you are actually doing
Flirting is two things at once: interest and play. Interest says "I noticed you and I like what I see." Play says "and I am not taking this too seriously." When both are present, a woman can relax. When only interest is present, it feels heavy. When only play is present, it feels like a joke with no point.
A simple test: could she tell, after thirty seconds, that you find her attractive and that you are enjoying yourself? If yes, you are flirting.
Start with a clean opener
The first line only has to get you into a conversation. Something like "Hi, I am Alex. I saw you from over there and wanted to meet you" is honest and enough. Add something specific if you have it, like the book she is reading or the way she laughed.
Keep your voice calm and slow. Look at her, not at the floor. Then stop talking and let her answer. The pause is where many men lose it, because they rush to fill it with a joke or an explanation.
Show interest without an interrogation
After the opener, get curious about her, but do not fire questions. Respond to what she says with a reaction, a guess or a story of your own, then ask something. For example, if she says she just moved here, you might say "Brave. Let me guess, you already have a favorite coffee place," and let her correct you. We cover this more in how to not sound like you are interviewing her.
Add a little humor
Teasing shows that you are comfortable enough to joke with her. Keep it kind and about something small. "You say you hate crowds, yet you picked the busiest cafe in the neighborhood" is a gentle tease. Say it with a smile and then move on.
Do not tease something she might be sensitive about, like her looks or her job. If she looks hurt, say "I am kidding, you seem great" and change the subject. The aim is to make her smile, not to win a point.
Let your body say it too
Most of what a stranger reads comes from how you stand and sound:
- Face her, with relaxed shoulders and open hands.
- Hold eye contact for a moment, then look away and come back.
- Stay a comfortable distance away. Step closer only if she does.
- Smile when something is actually funny, not all the time.
If she steps back, crosses her arms or keeps looking past you, she is giving you her answer. Wrap it up politely.
Read her and match her pace
The best flirting is a two-way thing. If she laughs, leans in or asks you something, you can add a little more warmth or humor. If she answers briefly and looks at her phone, you have your answer. "Nice meeting you" is a good ending, and it keeps your dignity.
When it is going well, ask for her number or Instagram and suggest a specific plan: "I would like to see you again. Coffee this week?" Make it easy for her to say yes or no.
What to avoid
- Scripts and pickup lines. They sound rehearsed and make her feel like a target.
- Compliments on her body. They put her on the spot.
- Pushing past a no. A no is the end of the conversation.
- Talking only about yourself. Share, but give her space to talk.
Why practice beats reading
You can learn the ideas here in ten minutes. What takes longer is making them feel natural while your heart pounds. That comes from doing many approaches with someone who can tell you what he saw. On a Cold Approach Bootcamp you work on approaching and conversation, attraction and delivery, numbers and dates, and handling rejection, in the field with live coaching and feedback after every set. There is no skill floor, so a first-timer is exactly who it is built for.
Common questions
How do I know if she wants to be flirted with?
Look for open body language, eye contact and answers that include a question back to you. Brief replies and a turned shoulder mean she is not interested.
What if I lock up in the first seconds?
That is common. Start with a plain hello and let the rest follow. Practice with a coach shortens the lock-up quickly.
