Decide What Your Standards Mean
Most men say they want a kind, loyal, attractive woman. Those words sound clear until you try to use them while dating.
What does kind mean in real life? Does she speak with care when she’s upset? Does she thank the server at a restaurant? Does she ask about your work and listen to the answer?
What does loyal mean? Does she keep private things private? Does she keep plans she makes with you? Does she make room for you without dropping every other part of her life?
Write down five standards that matter to you. Then turn each one into a behavior you can see.
For example:
- “She’s honest” means she tells you when she changed her mind instead of making up an excuse.
- “She’s ready for a relationship” means she makes time to see you and talks about what she wants.
- “She respects me” means she can disagree without calling you names.
- “She takes care of herself” means she handles her work, money, home, and health with care.
- “We have strong chemistry” means you enjoy sitting close, talking, and touching her.
Keep the list short. If you demand twenty traits, you’ll judge every woman against a fantasy. A good standard helps you choose well. A long list can help you avoid giving anyone a real chance.
Also separate standards from preferences. You may prefer a certain style, height, job, or music taste. Those things can matter. They just don’t carry the same weight as honesty, warmth, and shared goals.
Look at What She Does
A woman can say all the right things on a first date. Her actions tell you more.
She may say she wants a serious relationship. Then she may cancel three plans, send late-night texts only, and avoid any talk about her life. Her words sound good. Her choices give you the answer.
Watch how she treats people who cannot give her anything. Notice how she speaks to a waiter when the order is wrong. Notice how she talks about an ex. Notice if she asks you questions or spends the whole meal talking about herself.
You don’t need to inspect every detail. You need enough time to see whether her words match her choices.
Here’s a simple example. She tells you she values direct talk. Later, you tell her that a joke hurt you. A woman who meets that standard may say, “I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I see why it landed badly.” She may ask what would feel better next time.
A woman who does not meet it may laugh at you, call you too sensitive, or punish you for bringing it up.
One poor moment does not tell you everything. People have bad moods and rough days. Look at what happens after you speak up. Does she take some care with the problem, or does she make you pay for raising it?
Your job is not to fix her habits. Your job is to notice them.
Stop Bargaining Against Yourself
Many men spot a problem early, then explain it away because they like her.
She lies about where she was. You tell yourself she was scared to upset you. She insults you in front of friends. You tell yourself she was only joking. She never makes room for you. You tell yourself she’s busy.
Ask one clean question: “If nothing changed, would I want this relationship?”
If the answer is no, don’t build your choice around the hope that she will become different. Choose based on what she does now.
This does not mean you leave after one small mistake. It means you stop arguing with clear facts.
A guy I coached dated a woman who often called him after midnight. She rarely agreed to a real date. He kept thinking that one good night meant she was about to take him seriously. He finally looked at the full record. She liked his attention, but she did not give him a place in her life. He stopped making excuses for her and stopped seeing her.
That choice felt hard because he wanted her. It was still the right choice for him.
Standards only work when they cost you something. If you stay every time a woman breaks a standard, you have a wish, not a standard.
Meet Women in Places That Fit Your Life
You raise your odds of meeting the right woman when your daily life puts you near women who share your values.
If you want a woman who enjoys an active life, spend time in places where people move and take part. Join a climbing gym. Take a cooking class. Go to group runs or local events. If you care more about calm talks and creative work, try a book club, art class, or small music show.
You still need to talk to women. A shared place does not do the work for you. It simply gives you more natural topics.
At a cooking class, you can say, “Have you made this dish before?” At a book club, you can say, “What did you think of the ending?” Then pay attention to how she responds. Does she smile and ask you something back? Does she seem warm with the people around her?
Choose places you would enjoy even if you met no one. That keeps you from acting like every woman is a prize you need to win. You are checking for a fit too.
You should also meet women through friends, work events, and normal parts of your life. Tell your friends what kind of relationship you want. A friend may know a woman who shares your values and would enjoy meeting you.
When you meet someone, don’t ask, “How do I make her like me?” Ask, “Do I like how I act when I’m with her? Do I respect how she treats people? Can we build the kind of life I want?”
The right woman won’t make you lower your standards to keep her. You won’t need to talk yourself into wanting the relationship.
