You cannot. Bumble's help center lists what you can do in a chat: send a message, a GIF, photos, a video or a voice note, or play the Question Game. A like or a reaction on an individual message is not on the list. To show a woman you liked what she wrote, you answer it. To attach a message to your like before you match, you send a Note.

What a chat does let you send

The conversation page names the options. A written message, a GIF, photos, a video, a voice note and the Question Game.

That list is the whole toolbox. If you look for a heart on a single message and cannot find one, the app is not broken. Bumble's list does not include that feature.

Bumble does not show whether she read it

Bumble does not show read receipts or online or activity status in conversations. You cannot tell whether she opened your message, and you cannot tell whether she is in the app at this moment.

Men who look for a message like are often looking for a sign that she saw theirs. Bumble gives no such sign. A quiet chat tells you nothing, so do not read a lack of reply as a verdict and do not send three follow-ups to find out.

Show you liked it by answering it

A like is a small acknowledgment, and a reply is a better one. Pick the part of her message that interested you and respond to that specific part.

If she writes that she has just come back from a trip, say which part you would want to hear about. If she makes a joke, add one line of your own. This says more than a heart ever would, because it proves you read the whole thing.

Keep the reply short. a dating coach's texting principles are to say one point, or two at most, per message, and not to send your whole life story. A reply she can answer in ten seconds is a reply she will answer.

Do not write like a letter

a dating coach names being too formal as a common texting fault. Text is informal, so write the way you talk to a friend you like, without greetings and sign-offs.

If you have a long thought, he suggests sending it as a voice message, or using it as an excuse to call. Bumble's voice notes make this easy.

If you want to send a message with a like

Some men who search this are not asking about chats at all. They want to like a woman and add a line of their own.

Bumble has a separate feature for that called Notes, previously called Compliments. A Note is a message you send before you match, about a profile photo, a prompt answer or a shared interest. It is limited to 150 characters.

To send one, open the member's profile and tap the heart in a speech bubble icon, or Send a Note. Notes are included with Premium+, or you can purchase them separately.

How to write a Note

Make it about her page. Mention the one detail that caught your eye, and add one line about you or a question she can answer.

Skip a bare compliment on her looks. She hears that all day, and it gives her no way into a real exchange. A Note that points at her dog, her trip or her answer to a prompt is the kind she can reply to in a line.

What not to expect from messages

Messages cannot be deleted individually once they are sent. If you want a chat gone from your view, you have to unmatch, and that removes the whole conversation and ends contact.

So write each message as one you would be comfortable having her show a friend.

What to do next

Stop looking for a like button. Reply to the specific thing she said, keep it short, and suggest a day and a place once a few real exchanges have happened.
