Tinder says it tries not to. It says it prioritizes people who are active, and active at the same time you are, and that it does not want to waste your time showing inactive users. Tinder's pages do not say how long a quiet profile stays eligible. The honest answer is that its aim is to show you recent activity, and some of what you see will still go nowhere.
What Tinder says it does
Tinder describes using the app as the most important part of its matching. Its stated approach is to favor people who are active, and who are active when you are.
It also says it does not want to waste anyone's time with profiles of inactive users. That is a stated aim and not a promise. A woman who was on last week and got busy can still be sitting in your stack, and Tinder does not say otherwise.
The practical point is that a profile is not the same as a person who is on the app today. What you can read is what Tinder chooses to show you about it.
The green dot
Tinder shows a green dot next to potential matches who have been online in the last 24 hours. It is called Recently Active.
So a dot tells you she opened the app some time in the past day. It does not tell you she is looking at it now, and it does not tell you she wants a conversation. A woman can open the app for ten seconds, close it and not come back for a week.
No dot does not mean she is gone either. It means Tinder has not marked her as active in that window.
Online Now
On recommended profiles that have been active in the last two hours, Tinder shows Online Now. That is a tighter window and a more useful one.
If you see it, she was on the app within two hours. That is the moment to match and write, if you are ready, because a woman who is checking her phone is more likely to answer than one who matched a week ago and has not looked since.
Treat it as a nudge about timing, not as a promise. Plenty of women who are online do not reply, and plenty who are not online will answer tomorrow.
What it means for your own activity
Tinder says using the app regularly helps people be more front and center, see more profiles and make more matches. That is the most direct advice in its pages: being active is part of being shown.
You can also hide your own activity. In Settings, tap Recently Active Status and turn Show Activity Status off. Or turn Online Now off under the Active Status header.
Whether to hide it is your call. Hiding the dot means a woman cannot see how recently you were on, which can save you from being judged by a sleepy week. Leaving it on tells her you are around. Neither one changes whether she likes you.
What to do when a chat goes quiet
The thing worth worrying about is not whether the profile was inactive when you saw it. It is what you do after you match.
a dating coach describes a story most men will know. You message a woman for days and weeks without ever getting her number or making plans. Eventually her account goes inactive and she stops answering, or she says she is not really ready when you finally try to make plans. His point is that the problem is a chat that never turned into a plan.
So when a match comes in, write while she is likely around, ask one specific question about something on her page, and suggest a meeting within a few messages. A woman who was online when you matched is still online in your head only if you act while it is true.
Make your own profile worth the attention
Whatever the dot says, the profile in front of you is judged in seconds. Yours is judged the same way.
Use a recent photo of your face as the lead, in daylight. Put in a few lines that give her something to reply to, with one true detail she could only be reading about one man. And keep the rest of the fields filled in, because a blank job and a blank city give her nothing to open with.
Then count what happens. If you match often and she goes quiet, the problem is on your side of the chat. If you match rarely, look at the first photo. Neither one is solved by hunting for women who are online now.
