Yes, some do, and it usually means less than it feels like. Once a conversation lives in text messages, the Hinge chat has done its job, and plenty of women clear it away. Unmatching also cannot stop you from texting the number she gave you. If the unmatch is followed by silence on your phone, that silence is the real answer. The unmatch itself tells you almost nothing.
Why a match vanishes after the swap
The most boring reason is the most common one. The chat has moved, so the old one is clutter.
A woman with a dozen conversations open in the app does not want a dead chat sitting in her list next to the live ones. Once the number is swapped, deleting it is a way of closing the file. She is not necessarily telling you anything.
Another reason is privacy. Some women give a number to one man and want the app to stop showing him. Unmatching removes you from her view in Hinge, and she still decides whether to answer your texts.
The third reason is the one men fear. She gave you the number to be polite, then thought better of it and cut the connection she could cut. You will know that one by what happens next, not by what Hinge shows.
What the unmatch does and does not do
Hinge says that when someone unmatches you, you disappear from her view at once. The conversation goes for both of you, and Hinge cannot restore it.
It does not reach into your phone. Her number is still in your contacts, and nothing in the app stops a text from landing. Hinge's help pages do not describe a notification to her either, so she will not see a message that you noticed.
The part that stings is that you may only find out later. When a match goes missing, Hinge names three possible causes: she unmatched you, she deleted her account, or Hinge removed it for breaking the rules. You cannot tell which from your screen. Your texts will tell you more.
Check the texts, not the app
If you texted her your name the minute you swapped numbers, check how that message went.
A reply, even a short one, means the unmatch was housekeeping. Carry on from the text and treat Hinge as finished with.
If your message was delivered and nothing came back, she may have lost interest. Send one more light text that suggests a plan in a day or two, and nothing after that. A third and fourth message to a woman who has gone quiet only makes the silence louder, and it tells her you have nothing else going on.
If the text shows as not delivered, she may have blocked you or given you a wrong number. Either way, nothing more can be done.
How the swap itself goes wrong
Many of these unmatches are the result of how the number was asked for.
My method is to tie the number to a plan. You suggest something specific, she agrees, and you say something like "sounds good, here is my number, what is yours?" A number handed over for a real plan feels safe. A number requested with no plan attached feels like being collected.
He also describes a short, purposeful run of texts after that, four to seven in all, each one moving toward the meeting. If you swap numbers and then go quiet, or send a stream of small talk, her interest fades and the unmatch follows.
So text her your name straight away. Mention the plan again in your own words. Then propose the day.
Hinge may ask about it too
A few days after you exchange numbers, Hinge asks whether you went on a date, through a feature called We Met. If you have not met yet, you can leave it and update it once you have.
That means the app expects the conversation to leave the app. A match disappearing after the swap does not mean anything went wrong with the app or with you.
If you see it often
If you are seeing this often, look at the timing before you look at yourself.
Ask when she unmatched. If it was within an hour of the swap, it is almost certainly tidying. If it was after you sent a long run of messages with no plan, the problem is the conversation. If it was after a date, that is a different question, and it has a different answer.
Count your own results for two weeks: numbers swapped, texts answered and dates set. If the numbers are good and the unmatches are frequent, ignore them. If the texts go unanswered, work on the first message after the swap and the invitation inside it.
One last point. Do not keep the Hinge chat alive on purpose to keep her close. Move to text, make the plan, and let the app do whatever it does behind you.
